Hey everyone new here.

We are trying to increase our family and our little Dodge Caliber just isnt big enough any more. After looking at the market we want to buy a new Durango.

We are looking at the 2015 R/T with DVD center and towing hitch at a bare minimum. We are also wanting it in graphite.

This is our first time ordering/buying a new car what should we expect?

Are dealers going to be willing to go below MSRP/throw in extras?

What questions should we ask or demand of a dealer?

I mean ill be spending over 40k so i would rather get more for less than less for more and i feel the dealers should bend over for me and not the other way around.

I would also look at finding one on a lot that you like. January and February are the slowest months in auto sales so you can probably get a good deal. If you could find a 2014 you could get a steal on that. If you go to dodge.com you can find the one you are looking for, then go to truecar.com and get the best price from them. Also remember that the dealer's holdback is about 1800 under invoice before rebates so don't expect much more than 1,000 under invoice plus rebates.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.

We have looked at dealers up to 200 miles away. We are also looking at dealers closer to family members in different states so we can avoid ordering one however 99% of the Durangos we have found aren't what were looking for and are used rentals.

I have a weird phobia of buying a rental car. 10,000 miles on a rental is more like 20-30 in a rental to me. Plus most of the used 2014's are still selling for around 35k.

Were still looking just waiting to see what we can get pre approved for.

Generally if your credit is ok to good Chrysler will approve you for anything. I had a friend buy a new 300 with a 580 credit score. It's just a matter of what you can afford in a monthly payment.

No matter how amazing Durangos are its not worth over extending yourself. Vehicles get old long before the pain of a big car payment ends.

Just friendly advice, I'm not trying to be condescending or anything. Dealers will tell people "you can afford it" then 6 months later they are choosing between their car payment or dinner.

I should also say my credit score is much higher than 580 but on young. I did do the online pre approval thing thru crystler but they only pre app rt oved me for about 29,000 I'm not sure of that's because of the limited info they take online or what.

I wouldn't worry about the online approval.

I wasn't really looking to get too deep into your business, I just know people close to me do stupid things because a bank or finance manager said they could afford a car or a house, and 6 months later they were looking for help to make those payments.

What model, options and colors are you looking at?

Yah were hesitant on spending 2k for that feature.

We have a $100 dvd player on the caliber but with all the wires and having to hook it up when we go anywhere is such a pain.

It's hard to say we're going to have this car for a long time granted normal wear and tear and such.

I'm not opposed to coming to Chicago heck in talking to a dealer in Indiana and Kansas at the moment.

here is a link to one of their Gray ones. They have 2 Gray and 2 black ones in stock with the same MSRP. The last link is to Naperville Dodge where there is a 2014 White Durango RT. I am sure you can get a great deal on that one. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks Steve for the complement.

yes it is, when I picked up my Durango and I was in the finance office and asked about the lifetime warranty and the finance guy said that it would be 3,000. I said can't you match your online price? he played dumb and said that he didn't know that they were selling the warranty for cost. It was actually pretty funny. He ended up giving me it for the same price without too much hassle after I showed him his dealer's quote.

Well we went to a local dealer and fought with them for about an hour or so (we talked to them the other day) tonight. They wanted to charge us MSRP if we ordered a new vehicle which we made clear we weren't doing. All they wanted to give us was the current incentive which again that's nothing to us.

After they wouldn't do us any favors we took our papers and walked out. While strapping our child into his car seat one of the managers came out (typical dealer behavior) was talking to me outside asking what my magic number was i explained if they told me what their invoice price was i could give them that number because i understand they need to make money as well but when we asked the sales man he refused to give us that number.

He asked if we would come in and see what he could work out. I said look i don't have time Ive got to see what the next dealer will do because i just wasted an hour here. In response he asked to see our paper and instantly figured a actual decent price something we might of just taken then. He also said if we went in for a few minutes (aka another hour) he would print off the invoice and let us look at all the details.

Alright fine ill play their little game.

Went inside and told them they were closer to my magic number but not quite there.

After a while they gave us a decent number like 45,280 + current rebate of $750 which is better than MSRP at 46,280

We had asked if we could talk it over amongst ourselfs because its still more than we wanted to pay and they said fine. We were going to ask for 45,000 even but then they came in and worked a deal on the tow package.

I explained earlier how the tow pkg is 995 on all of the base models but the R/T already has 3 of the 5 added features the only thing it lacked was the wire harness and hitch. I told them i could buy an aftermarket hitch and wire harness for $200. They didnt believe me so i pulled up Etrailers and aded the hitch and harness to my cart and proved them wrong.

So they said they will take the tow package take the 200 out of the deal if we would pay half of the differance so a little more than 1/3 of the actual cost of the package.

This puts us at 44,970 or something. Once they deducted that from the invoice cost they were left with 1,001 over invoice and they said they will just even out that and put it at 1,000 over invoice.

So out the door total (tax license registration) $46,383.88 +/- taxes and such

They also said if any incentive comes up between the time we order and the time the car comes they will give us the best incentive. We wanted to make sure that we wont get screwed out of a good presidents day incentive if we ordered now.

I asked if i can have a night to think about it before i make any guarantees so they went ahead and did a bill of sale so tomorrow if we are ok with this price i can give them a $1,000 deposit and they will put the order in.

What do you all think?

This is for a
2015 R/T
Granite Crystal
DVD center
tow package

The dealer also offers
free rental anytime the car is in the shop for the life of the vehicle
15% off parts
10% off labor

I do not think it is a good deal. i just ran the True Car price for Chicago and you can get the same vehicle for 41,399. $3,500 less than what you are getting. I know Zeigler would order that durango for you for $41,200 Below is an image of TrueCar.com

BenCurt24 just ordered virtually the same durango for $41,000 in Iowa.

Chicago is over 4.5 hours away so is it worth it in the long run to have to drive 4.5 hours every time i need repair or if their is an issue. Or is it worth the extra few thousand for dealer perks less than 10 mins away?

I live an hour away from the Dealer that I bought my Durango from but i have it serviced at the Dealer that is less than 15 minutes from my house. You can have it serviced at ANY Dodge dealer.

So in other words in the free rental and discounts on parts and labor worth it?

In reality it shouldn't be (This Durango best be made of gold and last forever for that price haha) but its for the lifetime of the car and they have done great work for me in the past.

Alright so i went to the dealer mentioned the blacktop package and they said they will give it to us at cost so something like $264.

I told them "look i'm spending 46k here you can eat $300 throw it in as a hey thanks for staying local and spending more than you have to" and they refused. I said well Ive got to think about this its a big decision.

Came home and called Zeigler up in Chicago. Spoke with a Matt Weintraub told him that i have already dealt with a dealer for 4 hours and i dont want to waster his time or mine but if he can give me a good deal he may make the easiest deal this year.

Told him what we wanted and said he would get me a price within the hour.

He sent us a price of $42,865. I called him told him he was much cheaper and ill do whatever i can to go to Chicago and deal with them. Asked if he could send me a out the door price so i can go talk to the bank tomorrow.

Now the questions is "How do i tell my current dealer to shove it?" and "What more should I ask from Zeigler?"

I think you're pretty good on the Ziegler side. Depending on how long you want to keep the vehicle, you might want to see what they will do on a Mopar extended warranty (search for info on that on the forum).

as far as the local dealer, cut bait. If they call or if you have to call them, just tell them they weren't even remotely competitive and you've gone somewhere else. The horse is out of the barn.

Call your local dealer and tell them that they lost out on the sale and that you're going father away for the better deal. Thank them for their time helping you and tell them that you're sorry you couldn't work something out since they're near by and hang up. They'll either call you back or they won't. If they do, or they pull a let me see what I can do, tell them that you're not interested in anymore games. Ask for the bottom line and be ready to go if they budge. If they're going to lose out on a sure sale and they take you seriously, you have the best chance. Telling them to fly a kite won't get you anywhere.

The Nappa does get you "nicer" seats, but it also gets you Auto Headlamp control, Cargo cover and net, Power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 8-way power driver and passenger seat, Rain sensitive wipers, and Ventilated front seats.

Ziegler is the dealer I bought my truck from. They are very easy to deal with. They are also the company that does the 60% below list on the extended warranties. In an earlier post in this thread I posted a link to their online extended warranty site.

I would take Steve's suggestion and tell them beat the deal or beat it. When you come to Chicago to Pickup your Durango hit me up and we can meet for lunch at Portillos right down the block from them. They have the best damn hotdogs in the country.

You dont have to do anything with that dealer. The sales donkey can answer his manager as to why they made no sale. Or the manager can answer to his manager as to why there was no sale. If he cant eat 300 it wasnt worth it
As Tom said Ziegler is one of the kings with warranties, see what he will give you the lifetime for if your gonna keep that D
Besides Paul will meet you there and take you out to Lunch
