the ram air setup is the short ram air intake I installed, I was going to pull away the rubber by the radiator, but I'm a little worried about it sucking in water when I'm barreling down the highway, has anyone done this before?

Yes you can take away that rubber part. No problems.

Hey forgive me for not being an ASE certified tech, It's just a new air intake, it works great I love it. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm going to cut that rubber piece off, you're sure it won't give me any grief on a rainy day?

The rubber piece that runs vertical along side the rad? If so, yea you can remove it. You'll get more airflow that way. If anything, it may cause a little more of a dirty engine compartment but not much. I haven't had that part for years.

Here's that intake, any suggestions? Something a dummy can fab to put over it to prevent splash up, also, I wanna clean out the engine bay make it look nice again, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what to use, you know? I wiped off covers, and down by the old airbox space

 

my faint recollection is that the factory airbox took its air from the wheel well, so it was CAI out of the box. It's been a while since I've had a 99 tho?

I think the rubber panel was there to keep air from recycling when you're stopped? IIRC later years didn't have it. This caused some other issues (I think), like the frozen windshield washer lines on my '03 during the trip home from the (I think) '03 plant tour (was that the one with the blizzard saturday morning?)

For a first pass at cleaning the engine bay, the local manual-spray-bay car wash works wonders. If you're not the sort that needs to polish your heater hoses, just doing a spray-bay cleanup every couple of months will do wonders to keep things from getting grungy? and makes working on the engine area SO much easier?

Lauren's xA gets the the spray-bay treatment every oil change (3 mo), and underhood it looks like it has maybe 1000 miles on it. This may change, however, when she's "on her own" starting next month?

I usually have a few drivability issues when I drench the engine bi-annually. I'm not sure if it's wet wires, harnesses, PCM, plugs, disty, etc. Something doesn't like getting wet. I make sure it's hot and do it anyway. Sometimes I leave it running. Haven't found a nice spray it-wash it down-and it looks detailed-type of cleaner as advertised. None of them really work great.

I'd wrap the coil in a plastic bag as well as the alternator.
Also, don't spray high pressure water directly onto the PCM.

PS, the polished heater hoses look good!

 

Removing the panel (I just folded it down) isn't going to do any harm. When I had my K&N I had it open for 6 years. The filter will catch a lot more dirt and bugs but rain and moisture aren't going to do anything? though if you're in the habit of mudding and hitting deep mud holes, I'd think about it.
