Is there a way to remove the 3rd row headrests?

The headrests, when in the up position, really block the rear window. When they are in the down position they bend forward and it would seem that it would be hard to put a car seat in either side of the 3rd row. Is there an easy way to remove them and put them back on at a later time?

I'd like to do the same thing for a different reason. When third seats are folded down the headrest take up some valuable space in the floor area.
When on trips etc it would free up some usable space. My third row seats will be down 99 % of the time.
Guess it can't be done. But they were put in there seems strange there is no way to take them out.

Best feature ever! One of the first things I did to the little Cretans when we got the D. Hey boys, climb in the way back and see what you think. Oh yeah! This is awesome. Hit button, thunk. Dad!!!

I don't feel bad anymore. I receive a great deal of joy popping my kids with that. Now I never hear, "are we there yet", nor do they even really whine. Therefore I just do it at random (accidentally).

I don't know how I missed this one before now, but I do the exact same thing. It's fun, the other kids usually get a laugh, and I never have to hear whining from the back row. It's nice, haha

Sorry you didn't get a decent answer from anyone. More interested in having their own brand of fun.

Least they could have said WHY they can't be removed if anyone knows. Or just "use a hacksaw" at least would have been better answer than most.

The question was answered right away by Steve. Does it matter why they can't be removed? They're part of the release mechanism that flips the headrest down when you flip the seat down or hit the button on the screen that we get so much joy out of.

bringing this back to life...

how is a katzkin install done then?

curious because I will be converting my stock cloth to stock RT leather and will need to know how to do this..

Im fairly confident it can be done by removing and disasembling the seats..

actually you can take the whole assembly out- and looks like there's some pins you can pull just to remove the headrest from the posts:

23 - Body / Seats / HEADREST, Third Row / Removal

1.Release the j-clips (2) and remove the headrest cover (1) from the headrest.

NOTE:

Illustration shown with headrest cover removed for clarity.

2.Release the clips (1) and remove the headrest (2) from the pivot mechanism posts

3.Remove the seat back cover. (Refer to 23 - Body/Seats/COVER, Seat Back - Removal)

4.Disconnect the cable end (3) and separate the cable housing (4) from the headrest mechanism (2).

5.Remove the bolts (1) and remove the headrest mechanism (2).

REMOVAL

(SORRY pics are in reverse order for whatever reason)

as mentioned by michaelk above.. the headrest themselves can be removed from 3rd row... as for the posts that attach to them... believe removal would be a little more difficult, perhaps permanent...

this is pic of 2nd row 60 bench (drivers side) but same goes with the 3rd row...
