My D' won't start. I see a part that has a plug off of it and I'm not sure if it's the starter or the ignition.

If standing in front of the Durango, looking down into the engine, on the lower right hand side It looks almost like a silver oil filter but it has a plug going to it.

I can also see it fron the drivers side front fender well. The Durango would "grind" (not turnover) but wouldn't start. I noticed the "sound" was coming from that part. The part seemed loose so thought it might be a bad spot on the starter. -- so I tapped on it with a stick. Noticed the part was really loose? Noticed it was missing a bolt which is one of two that holds it to the mainframe. It had rattled and shook the connecting wire loose. I figured, 'just plug it in and problem solved' but I can't get it to plug in! Kind of looks like a piece of the plug on the unit is missing or damaged?

So I need to know what that part is so that I can price a replacement!

I hope this made sense!

what hesaid. more info needed to help diagnose, please.

Sounds like a 5.2 or 5.9
I'm going out on a limb and stating that his starter has lost a bolt and broken. Also sounds like the starter solenoid has detached from it a bit

It's the starter!

Okay, It's the starter. Yes a bolt is lose. Broken? I don't think so, but it did rattle out. Also the wire/connector did come lose. In fact I think that's the whole problem. I have tried to clip it back in place, but it feels like it just won't "clip" or stay in the socket.

I'm guessing I'll have to replace the whole thing just to get the clip. Or I could get a junkyard part and take the clip off of it? A remanufactured one runs about $160 at a discount parts chain.

If I swap it out, is the starter pretty easy to remove?
