I see in your signature you have LED headlights. I won't give you the whole essay on why they suck, but they suck. Only OEM LED headlights are worth anything, drop in ones produce less light and you can run into issues like this... Put some halogen ones back in and see if they still do it.

Are those LED headlights stock or did you perform the upgrade yourself? If so, you should probably start troubleshooting your install procedures first.

 

No Durango to date has come with led headlamps. Halogen or hid only

How long were they running? How long have they've been installed?

 

Actually - I need to change my signature! I ended up doing HID's... Here is the problem... I rarely drive at night. And never noticed it until recently. Before the HID changeover, i may have driven it once at night. (I do remember thinking I can't see sh** with these headlamps. HID's are going in ASAP....) It probably does have to do with the HID Kit... Note, I've only owned the vehicle since I joined here. So figure June or so... They shut down pretty quickly - within 10 minutes of turning them on. Note, i had a very good shop do the work (I will be bringing the vehicle back to them as they warranty all their work) I have used them for a number of things... Complicated and simple. He told me to bring it by, I was more curious if anyone ran into the issue. Something seems to be telling the headlights to shut off... Canbus? Maybe?

 

In your situation, I suspect the computer does not sense the proper voltage/amperage draw that it is expecting with the stock headlight setup and therefore is pulling the plug.

Maybe try reinstalling the stock setup and test that before looking elsewhere. Assuming this works, then begin researching what methods are required to replace such components.

Vehicles today are more advanced than those in years past. We can't simply swap out electrical components since the computers are programmed to monitor the various current usage by such devices.

wasn't there a requirement that aftermarket headlights be canbus enabled? (or did I fall victim to a newbie prank, like turn-signal fluid, etc)?

 

I just read a thread called "HID Issue." It talks about a number of things.

 

Circuit is overheating and hutting down to protect harness.

 

How do I fix this? What can I buy to make this work?

 

Get the shop that did the install to fix it.

 

The factory wiring on 14-16 Gen 3's has very sensitive architecture. It doesnt like change from original design. I would tell the shop that did it to fix it.

agree with shop fixing it... BUT

curious as to your setup... whats it consist of... relay? capacitors? brand?

i have HID setups on my 11 and 14 and I do agree, they are sensitive systems, but can get them to work with PROPER install/equipment

 

They are a very knowledgeable shop - I am surprised he didn't know of this. He told me to bring it by and he will take care of it. I guess he can't know everything about every car right.

 

It was kinda trial and error with my 2011... Until I found the right setup
