Has anyone removed the third row seat?

I have had mine folded down since I bought it. I'm just wondering how hard it is to remove and what the result would be. I could probably build a custom (wooden) locker for additional storage while keeping the cargo area flat. My kiddies are grown and I will be rarely needing it.
I don't think you can buy a Gen 3 D without it. If you can, are there a mopar parts that fill it in? I think on the Gen 1's the unibody was actually different for those without the 3rd row. But I'm not sure on Gen 3.

The cargo bin for +9 speakers w/ sub must be molded differently for where it makes contact with the existing bin in the rear, which is part 6 on that same drawing. That's why there's two 2's, and two 6's. One for premium 9 speaker w/sub and one without. That makes a whole lot more sense now. So if you have the upgraded sound you want 5LJ41XXXAD, and if you don't you want 5LC37XXXAD. Apply the same logic if you ever need to replace the bin behind the third row too.

Ok so here are some pics. What I noticed is maybe those wall panels are needed. There's channels at the bottom that you can see where the bin storage rest on. I took a pic of the number on the back of the storage bins and a few pics of what it loos like removed and in. You can also see I don't have the AMP in the one storage compartment like you guys either.

So does the bin assembly snap into those tabs or just rest on them ? It looks like the bin rests pretty solidly on the floor + latches onto the leading edge of that back bin.
Are there any screws or fasteners holding it down ?

Great pics! Thank you!

It looks as if maybe the wall panels are the same, and either the arm rests or the bins snap on the side?... Ill have to take a closer look at mine sometime...

Hers is the only decent pic I have right now of JUST my 3rd row removed...

Not everyone buys the Durango for the third row it's a great option but in my world a useless weight adder.

Hello All,

Just signed up for an account on here. I've been browsing all the info for quite a while, and thought maybe I could contribute something, especially to this thread.
I'm currently (slowly) building an underfloor storage box in place of the existing factory storage box and the now removed third row seats in my 2011 Express D.

Pics to come - just wanted to get first post out of the way and say Hi and thanks for all the advice I have found on here.

My rear storage solution

So I purchased my 2011 Express last month to replace my 2004 that was getting a little old. I haven't done alot to it yet. Just new Maxpider floor mats, a bug guard, and replaced the passenger side blend door actuator gear so the wife now gets cold air when the A/C is on.

As with my old D I wanted more storage in the cargo area. I never used my third row seats in the '04 so all I did with that was remove the lower bench portion of the seat so I could put tools and the such behind the second row seats.

For my new truck I wanted a more permanent solution. The provided under floor storage is nice, and much better than the '04, but I still wanted more and since I will never use the third row seats, it seemed like a perfect place for a full length under floor box.

So here's what I have done so far:

I removed the third row seats, which was fairly simple. Pop up a couple plastic covers, take out 6 bolts, unplug the head rest electrical connector, and lift them, somewhat awkwardly, out.

Then I took out the factory cargo box, which was just a matter of clips and a few bolts, ending with a nice and empty cargo area.

I put a level across the floor and found that from the rounded bump at the back to the bump in the front was level. So I went and got a sheet of MDF and started cutting. I started by measuring to see how big of a base I could get in the area. I ended up with 34 1/2 x 49, which still leaves room for the second row seats to recline.
Then I measured up to the level of where the sidewalls turn to join the floor and figured out that its angled slightly. (Couple inches difference from front to back)

I then found out that the existing plastic cargo box was also support for the rear plastic trim piece so I had to build that area up to be the back of my new box and support the trim when reinstalled. This was done by cutting progressively deeper pieces of 2x10 and OSB to match the curve of the back of the truck.

I had to add one more piece of OSB on top and drill holes for the 3 plastic circles that support the trim piece and the 2 retaining clips. I also drilled a hole for access to the spare tire winch and counter sunk 2 holes for bolting the box down to the existing clips in the body. I also added the back of the box, cut at a 3 degree angle on top to match the sides of the box.

Then I cut the top to match the contour of the rear plastic trim

To be continued...

Continuation of my project:

I cut the back of the lid about 3" from the end and added a piano hinge. Second pic is with the plastic trim reinstalled for a test fit.

I then added the side rails that you can see in this pic, and drilled 3/4" holes in the sides for LED lighting.

Then everything got a coat of Drylok paint to protect the MDF from any water or humidity, the bottom also got a coat of black spray paint (which will be under a rubber mat anyways), and I started carpeting the sides.

Then I got my LED lights installed for a test and got some more carpet on.

I stole the cargo compartment latch from my old Durango, and inlet the lid for it.

I then painted the bottom of the lid black, and carpeted the lid. After all that dried I installed the lid and the latch.

And that's where it sits as of right now. I still need to clean up the wiring for the lights and install the switch for the lights in the cargo area somewhere, probably up by the 12 volt plug. I also have a set of gas pistons that I'm installing to hold the lid open cuz it is heavy. I'll also make another piece to cover the back of the box, and close in the angles that wrap around the side panels by the back doors.

I'll post pics as I finish it up.

Thanks for reading

So I got a chance to pretty much finish this up last weekend.

After some serious trial and error, I managed to get the shocks in the correct position to hold the lid up securely, and got the 4 interior LED lights wired up.

Then I removed some trim in the cargo area so I could wire up the switch beside the 12 volt plug, and wired in 2 more LEDs (one on each rear pillar near where the seat belts come out)that shine in the cargo area for those late at night trying to find something moments. Then all the trim went back on.

Then the final install and wiring everything together.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. I now have everything in the box that was previously in my 2004 D, plus some, and there's still plenty of room.
I still need to make the pieces for the sides that fill in the curved gaps near the second row seats, but that'll probably have to wait til after my inverter and outlet install in the front and rear seats.

Thanks for reading this. Hope I maybe gave somebody else the urge to build one or something similar. Please let me know if you do.

i know it's an old post but if someone is looking to remove the 3rd row & put in the special service cargo boxes it can be done quite easily the parts are available & it's an easy project.
quit literally remove seats, snap cargo containers in... i tried to give a description in my other post.
It’s the price of the plastic panels that sucks. You need different side panels and they are $500 each side. The ones for the seats have armrests and no lip on the bottom for the compartments to be supported by.

you have a link to this? I'd like to see what it looks like and cost as I'm not interested in building something like the above post, although that came out really nice, but if there's a plug and play type setup I might consider it. I will never use the 3rd row so it could be an option
