Fuel Tank Swap

I purchased an 05 Durango with the apparent fuel filling issue that has been well documented, but evidently my VIN is not covered. Since it was used, and a good deal, it needed some interior and exterior trim items replaced, so I found a local guy parting out an 04 model.

Being aware of the fueling issue, I purchased his fuel tank assembly complete for $50, presuming it would be the same for the Gen 2.

Survey says: X

I'm confident I can figure it out, but was hoping perhaps someone has already been don this path to advise??

There was an oem tank produced ( part # CBE0E010AB is a fuel tank used for recall purposes on 2005 Durango's. Will fit 2005-2007 Durango's)

The interesting thing is that the tank was priced new at $88. Not sure if any of them might be around at this point. The gas filler debacle was quite a busy topic while it was going on, so there are many threads on this and other Durango forums about it.
We had 2 05 Durangos at work, and ony one of them had the fuel spillback issue. IIRC, at first, we were also told that our D fell outside of the VIN range. Eventually, as more folks had the issue, Diamler/Chrysler (so called at that time) made the needed repairs in our case for $250. Others had theirs done for anywhere from free to a few hundred dollars. You might do a little research, and if you oem tank is the defective part number, you may be able to get it done anyway for little to nothing.

Jut some food for thought...........

I did quite a bit of research and felt that since my VIN wasn't included I would be SOL. This is the first I've heard where they went by part #. I've already dropped the tank, so at this point I'm committed. I believe I'll be good with the filler neck to make it doable. The breather hose on the 04 is huge compared to the later models. I snapped a pic of one in the parking lot at work. (yes I know the person). Later model is the size of a small straw.

Does your D fit this criteria?

At your leisure, check out this thread:

Thanks for all the responses regarding Dodge finally caving and covering other VIN's, but I already had the tank dropped and purchased the tank assembly for $50. Attached you can see the difference in the breather hose/pipe size. I'm not saying that is specifically the problem, but another $30 for the larger filler neck, $5 for a small retainer clip I broke on the fuel pump connector, and a few hours of patience and now all is good. Me and the Durango are happy campers.

I know this is an older post, but just wanted to give a shout to the OP and others. I found myself in pretty much the same scenario after getting an 05 for my kid, and finding out about the fuel spit back issue. No dealers in my area would work with me (+5yrs since this thread not even sure they could get the sanctioned repair parts). So the 04 conversion saved the day. His Durango now takes a full fuel up without issue. Appreciate the knowledge on the issue and the swap.

Swap requires tank and neck. Along with all the other tubes on the tank. If it's got a good fuel pump that's a bonus as they have a plastic flange that gets brittle, that makes swapping the fuel pump from your existing tank unlikely. Fuel pump is the same part if you can get it off without damage. Other than that the biggest issue is getting the filler neck out and new one in. It's like one of those metal brainteaser puzzles.

So I was able to get this fixed (no splash so far). I ordered a new Inlet Check Valve taking a risk that it would work and had my mechanic install it. All good so far. The part is designed for early 2000 Trailblazers that had their ICV cracking.

.

I spoke to the engineer who developed it and he said it should work. Here is the old valve for comparison.

I hope this can help someone out.
