I thought I'd consider doing my own axle fluid change this time around, at 36k miles?the dealer did the last one at 24k and while convenieent it was pricey at $45 in labor per axle (I provided Mobil 1.)
I crawled under the D yesterday to see what I'd be looking at?rear is easy?have done a couple of rears before? The front is a little more daunting because of the tight quarters?and cleaning the diff of the old RTV will be a pain?but I guess it'd be doable using some ramps and a lot of patience?
But?
I noticed that one of the two top bolts was sticking out crooked?put a wrench on it and it seemed tight so it wasn't just loose?it looks like it was crossed and never seated?
The dealer did this last time I guess, which disappoints me as I have been asking for the same mechanic each time a he was recommended by a friend?this is the same dealer who had used motor oil in my diffs (another mechanic, prior to this one)?I caught that before leaving and the recommended mechanic redid the job?which is when I guess this happened? :furious:
SO, I'm debating whether I should tackle this or not?I'm concerned that the bolt truly is stripped/crossed bad?it's not leaking, but once I yank it who knows?should I go back to the dealer and raise hell (was plannibg on going in for an oil change anyways?)
This really shakes my confidence (again) in the dealer?I mean, I might expect an amateur to leave a bolt like that, but a professional mechanic?? I saw the problem while laying under the truck in the driveway?he had the benefit of a lift?He should have seen this. :naughty:
I don't think there's enough room to get a tap up in there once I get the bolt out?
Thoughts anyone?? :?
