Hard to say what that is. From what I hear here, it could be a serpentine belt ripping, bad tensioner, alternator, or water pump bearing, connecting rod, wrist pin, broken valve spring, or even a missing spark plug (don't laugh, it happens)....
Are you getting any codes?
Bdan:
You can eliminate a lot of potential pieces from the equation by removing the serp belt, and firing it up that way. If the noise goes away, it's a good bet the problem is external and not internal to the engine. Don't run it very long tho, as your water pump won't be running. If it does go away, shut her back off, and rotate the pulleys by hand to feel for roughness and/or wobble.
Bdan:
Yep! That idler is ready for the scrap bin. While you are in there, consider replacing that along with any other idlers, and the tensioner. Don't you love it when something you fear might be expensive turns out to be rather simple?
Have you discovered what that noise is by chance? Only asking because my 2004 Durango started making the exact noise a few weeks ago after changing the water pump and I have not been able to figure it out
Wendie:
Did you get the water pump bolts back into the same holes they came out of? You can remove the serp belt, and see if the noise goes away or changes.
