End of Durango Line

I had made up mind to get a 2014 Durango until I read an article last night about the 2014 being the last production year for this Dodge line. It seems it's going to be rolled over into the Grand Cherokee. This then brought me up short. I asked myself if it made sense buying a vehicle that's going to be discontinued. What happens to its resale value in the future. I'm not overly concerned about parts, however. So I'm wondering what others think about this. Does it make sense to get the Durango now?

If you're buying a vehicle based on resale value, I suggest looking at a Honda Accord or a classic car as those tend to be more stable financial investments. If you're looking at buying a vehicle as a mode of transportation that's very capable and inspires emotion while driving it then take a look at the Durango.

This article is kinda wierd. First, there's an 8.8" Uconnect? He also spent the most time with the v6 "fake RT", which I guess explains why there are not pictures of the fully loaded Durango Citadel he said he drove. And then there's the fact that he's only reviewed maybe 14 cars on this site and some of his reviews sound like he just wrote an editorial, but never actually drove the car.

I think the recent serge in sales has given the Durango a new lease on life.

I also don't think it necessarily means the Grand Wagoner won't happen now, I suspect the GW, will still make it to production and will be built right along side the Durango for a while. If it does turn out to knock the wind out of the D's sales, I suppose that's when they will decided to rather kill off D.
If they both are selling well, I highly suspect they will be keeping both. I have noticed over the past couple years, that this Fiat bunch are a lot smarter then anyone ever thought. Fiat seems to be making all the right moves lately and you see it the press accolades all the awards and such and the sales reports are proving it.

If the public is asking for it, these guys are paying attention and bringing it to market. The Diesel 1/2 ton is one example of that. The ZF8 speed auto across most of their product lines is another.

As far as 2015's, Chrysler R&D spent some bucks refreshing the 2014, there is no way they would kill it after only one year, especially after investing the money in it's refresh and sales way up to boot.

Right now I am just really curious if the 15 Ds getting the Turbo Diesel added to it's option list. I had noticed that inside my fuel door of my new 14 Durango that there is a suspicious amount of space off to one side, almost just the right amount of space for DEF filler port.

That is probably because the WD (durango) and WK2 (GC) use the same parts there.

Which also means that it is relatively easy for Chrysler to change what options are available on what platform.. There is a fair amount of certification involved with an engine change, but if they see a lot of market pull in the US for the Diesel on the WK2 they could pretty easily drop it into the WD. The VM Diesel in a WD could make a very nice tow vehicle, for example..

The trick here is to make appropriate vehicles for each market and not fall into the "Badge Engineering" that nearly killed the US auto industry.

a case of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should.."

FWIW, Motor Trend just did a pretty good article on the major SUV's in the Durango class. Durango came out on top spot. They are pretty nice, you will not be dissapointed.

Here is the Motor Trend rankings:

1. Durango Limited AWD
2. Toyota Highlander XLE AWD
3. Nissan Pathfinder SL 4X4
4. Hyundai Santa Fe Limited AWD
5. Honda Pilot EX-L 4WD
6. Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD

I would not count the Durango as getting the diesel just yet. If it happens, I bet its when the Pentastar motors go direct injection.

So I stopped by the dealership getting an oil change. I decided to kill some time with the salesman that assisted me in building my truck. We got to talking about the newer D and he told me he saw some concept pics of one and it's getting a cosmetic revamp. Same frame and trans as the 14 just a new look. He also said that the talk of a SRT8 option is on the drawing board for the 2016 model. He also said that, that model will more than likely make or break the D line. So for now it's just word of mouth, but keep fingers crossed!!!!
