EDIT Dec 1, 2023: If you're reading this thread for the 1st time ... you can skip to post 91 for the solution to unlocking the SRT Dashboard and making Drive Modes work. Still working on Launch Control.

Drive Modes on a 2023 Tow & Go! :D

Image

EDIT Mar 17, 2024: See post 177 for details on how to keep the dashboard from disappearing after some time

And see post 178 for details on getting the Tow & Go panel buttons to work along side the SRT drive mode functionality.

__

Considering the Tow-n-Go is essentially an SRT with a 5.7L engine instead of a 6.4L or SC 6.2L engine, I wonder if it would be possible to enable Launch Control. I realize the "Launch" surface button isn't present, but if it can be enabled in the PCM/BCM/ABS systems, I would expect the "Perf Control" (or something similar) to appear in the uConnect menus for accessing it.

I already have AlfaOBD and a communications cable, and I had a Tazer on my 2016 R/T, but it appears Tazer doesn't yet support uConnect 5 even with the security bypass module.

I don't yet have my 2023 TnG, as I ordered it last month and am still waiting, but am curious if this would even be possible once we take delivery of it.

So 1st question is: Has anyone used AlfaOBD on a 2023 model with the uConnect 5 system yet? Will it connect and allow changes or does it require an unlocked PCM (which hasn't yet been made available)?

@Duh-rango : I saw your post over at Challenger Talk, where you were able to get the performance pages and launch control working on your R/T manual transmission Challenger, great work and great info!

But it appears you had to use the Tazer for some of this process. While zAutomotive doesn't yet support the uConnect 5 system, I wonder if enabling of the drive modes might not be needed on a Tow-n-Go due to the nature of the TnG having many of the SRT features already. I also wonder if the Tow-n-Go already has the "SRT" flag set to "Yes" since it has the adaptive suspension along with Track mode already or if it's more like the Scat package where there would be a new value other than SRT (Maybe TNG or something?).

Of course, all of this would be a moot point if AlfaOBD requires an unlocked PCM ...

Actually I did not need the tazer. I only used it to see how drive modes was enabled. I have everything setup with alpha. In fact I now only use the tazer live features as I can no longer marry the tazer to the challenger.

As for an unlocked PCM, if the PCM does not have launch enabled by default (like challengers, except SXTs, do but not chargers...at least non-SRTs) then you would need to enable it with HP tuners.

Ahh, got it ... thanks.

So your summary in the other thread is:

ChallyTatum said:
So to recap, for my vehicle the changes I needed to make in the BCM with alfaOBD were:

Performance Pages Present: Present (was originally not present) -- not really critical but hey why not
Drive mode feature configuration: Set (was originally not set) -- this made sport mode work again and TC would turn off automatically.
Memory drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
ESC drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
Chassis Type: Type 77 (was originally 76)
Super trac pack present: Set (was originally not set)

I then connected to the ABS module and ran the initialization per alfaOBD instructions.
So if "Launch" is enabled in the PCM by default, then it appears all the other changes needed are in the BCM? Then follow it up with an initialization of the ABS module?

If I break those steps down, I think it means the following for a Tow and Go:

  • Performance Pages Present: Present (was originally not present) -- not really critical but hey why not
    • This should already be enabled since Perf Pages are already part of the R/T package
  • Drive mode feature configuration: Set (was originally not set) -- this made sport mode work again and TC would turn off automatically.
    • This should already be present as well, since the R/T includes "Sport" by default, and the TnG includes "Track", "Tow", and "Snow" drive modes
  • Memory drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
    • Not sure on this one?
  • ESC drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
    • Not sure on this one?
  • Chassis Type: Type 77 (was originally 76)
    • Not sure on this one?
  • Super trac pack present: Set (was originally not set)
    • Maybe n/a for a Durango?

I imagine Chassis Type will be something different in the Durango. Probably will need someone with an SRT Durango to connect and see what their Chassis Type code is.

The more I look att he above, it seems the BCM would already have the config needed to make Launch appear ... so maybe it is the PCM which has it turned off after all? Hmm...

So chassis type is what makes or breaks launch mode as it instructs the ABS and EVIC modules to provide the display on the dash. I think a member here sent me a read of their SRT durango but from my experience using an SRT chassis type will lead to either an ABS warning light or some other code. Durangos respond differently to changes in the BCM. When I tried enabling PP on my GT it gave me all sorts of codes and errors...BCM was not happy.

That makes sense. Can you pull the chassis type value out of that log the other member sent and post it please?

I imagine setting chassis type to the SRT Durango value on a GT, or even a regular R/T, would cause a problem since there are SRT suspension and SRT brake hardware components missing from those models. But since the Tow-n-Go includes those hardware components, Id think the same errors and warning lights wouldn't happen. It's worth a try anyway.

Great, thanks!

I think I'll need to order a security bypass module to connect to my 2023 when it arrives, but need to read up some more on it.

It seems the AlfaOBD website is not longer active :(

I just went to the Alfa site and works for me? As for the security bypass, get the tazer version. There was a jeep owner that had issues with HP tuners version in that it would not initialize ABS properly. In fact, there is a thread about it on HP tuners.

Hmm... I checked my firewall logs and my network security is blocking it. It's being blocked because I have all traffic to Russia blocked off, and apparently AlfaOBD site is hosted out of Russia (it triggered the firewall rule I have setup to block that region). I'll need to unblock it for a period of time to be able to access temporarily.

Would you mind sharing the full AlfaOBD log from the SRT with me? I'd like to compare it to the 2023 TnG when it arrives, so see how different things are.

Oh, and ya ... I actually ordered the Tazer gateway bypass earlier this morning. I already have an ODBLink SX cable (I use a Windows PC for this), but not sure if I'll need a new cable for the '23 MY

Hmm, I wonder if these options are what allows the SRT to have customized drive modes vs. only fixed modes in the TnG?

Drive mode feature configuration: Yes
Memory Drive Mode Sub-feature Configuration: Yes
ESC Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: Yes
ECM Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: Yes

The TnG has all the right parts to have a custom drive mode, but the screen doesn't show up in uConnect:

So I finally have my 2023 TnG, and also now have an OBDLink EX cable and AlfaOBD, so I started looking into this.

I pulled a BCM log today, just to see what the TnG parameters are set to, and to compare them to the 2021 Hellcat log.

Here is my 2023 R/T TnG OEM parameters which differ from the Hellcat, or at least the ones I think are pertinent here (there are others like gear ratio, fog lights, etc ... which shouldn't matter). I used Notepad++ with the "Compare" plug-in to compare the two, and most are matching except for these:

2023 R/T TnG values:
  • Special Package: WD Default/High Output/Standard R/T
  • Special Package: No Package
  • Memory Drive Mode Sub-feature Configuration: No
  • ESC Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: No
  • ECM Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: No
  • Configuration For Performance & Gear Shift Indication: Not Present
  • Vehicle is an SRT: No
  • Chassis Type: Type 103
  • Sport Mode Present: Yes
  • Super Trac Pack Present: Yes
  • Suspension ECU Configuration B: 226.000
  • Active Damping: 6.4L Apache MDS & Active Damping Susp or 5.7L & Active Damping Suspension

My TnG does have these enabled though:
  • Drive mode feature configuration: Yes
  • Performance Pages Present: Yes

Here are the 2021 Hellcat values:

  • Special Package: WD SRT
  • Special Package: John Varvatos/Hellcat
  • Memory Drive Mode Sub-feature Configuration: Yes
  • ESC Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: Yes
  • ECM Drive Mode Sub-Feature Configuration: Yes
  • Configuration For Performance & Gear Shift Indication: Performance shift indication
  • Vehicle is an SRT: Yes
  • Chassis Type: Type 102
  • Sport Mode Present: No
  • Super Trac Pack Present: No
  • Suspension ECU Configuration B: 228.000
  • Active Damping: 6.2L Hellcat & Active Damping Susp & Competition Susp

The Hellcat also has these enabled:
  • Performance Pages Present: Yes
  • Drive mode feature configuration: Yes

So looking through the Challenger Talk thread I linked to above, these are the steps which enabled Launch Control on a Challenger:

  1. Performance Pages Present: Present (was originally not present) -- not really critical but hey why not
  2. Drive mode feature configuration: Set (was originally not set) -- this made sport mode work again and TC would turn off automatically.
  3. Memory drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
  4. ESC drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set (was originally not set)
  5. Chassis Type: Type 77 (was originally 76)
  6. Super trac pack present: Set (was originally not set)
  7. I then connected to the ABS module and ran the initialization per alfaOBD instructions.

So for my TnG, maybe I can get it done by:

  1. Performance Pages Present: Present
    1. Do nothing - Mine is already enabled
  2. Drive mode feature configuration: Set
    1. Do nothing - Mine is already enabled
  3. Memory drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set
    1. Need to enable this one
  4. ESC drive mode sub-feature configuration: Set
    1. Need to enable this one
  5. Chassis Type: Type 77 (was originally 76)
    1. Change my Chassis Type from 103 to 102, to match the Hellcat
  6. Super trac pack present: Set
    1. Do nothing - Mine is already enabled
  7. I then connected to the ABS module and ran the initialization per alfaOBD instructions.
    1. Perform this step, assuming the TnG and the Hellcat use the same ABS module (still need to confirm this but not sure how).

Will update this thread as I try different things and learn more. What I don't know is if the PCM has Launch enabled already, and I don't have HP Tuners to be able to check. I'm hoping it's like the Challengers where all trims have it enabled ....

EDIT: Just adding a view of the full compare of differences between my '23 TnG and the '21 Hellcat. Right click on the image and choose "Open Image in new tab" to view it in a legible format.

Ah looks like you pulled my config back when I enabled launch on my challenger. Because of that thread on CT I have received a ton of emails from folks all over the world to help them get launch going on their challenger/charger. The only hiccups are (1) chassis type might be incompatible with the ABS module (will throw a configuration mismatch code and then some) and (2) the PCM does not have launch enabled by default (generally it is not for charger RT and SXT models from what I have seen).

Yep, exactly. It would be nice to confirm the ABS module of a Hellcat ... I assume I can pull the ABS module ID on mine with AlfaOBD somehow?

If I do try it, and the ABS is different ... do I need a dealer visit to recover or is it just a matter of setting Chassis Type back to 103 and then doing another ABS initialization?

You should be able to set it back via the old chassis type. If you connect to the ABS module and do a read of it like you did with the PCM you should be able to pull the part number IIRC.

Why launch control on an R/T? The R/T cannot spin rear tires if you have the AWD version. Press the brake, bring it to 1200-1500 RPMS and depress the brake. At those RPMs TM is disabled off the line so you will get the best launch.

I figure why not? I'd certainly like custom drive mode, and if I can get launch control as well, all the better.

I queried the ABS and ENGINE today:

I don't see anything in the ENGINE log to indicate if Launch is enabled or not, and not sure what I'm looking at with the ABS. I Googled "68632412AA" but am not finding any results.

So then I tried to find the part numbers for the ABS computer of a 2023 TnG as well as a 2021 Hellcat, but can't find either.

Before I go trying to change the Chassis Type from 103 to 102, I'd like to see if I can confirm the ABS modules of each. Maybe someone with a 2021 or newer Hellcat, who has AlfaOBD, can query their ABS for comparison?
