Cracked racetrack light.

517 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Durango El Diablo
Hey all, I am so mad at myself. I just backed into my trashcan and cracked the rear racetrack light. Do they make just the outer lens cover (couldn't find just the outer lens) or do I need to purchase a complete light for 800.00?

Thanks,
Jeff

Called the dealer and you have to buy the whole thing, so I did. Ugg
Ouch, that sucks...
Well... you could run a case study on how long before a portion of the light will fail due to moisture intrusion... :p

Funny you mention that. Mine's a '15 RT and I've always considered myself lucky the light hasn't failed yet, lol
The joke is on me. Oh, and I'll be sure to seal the new one up real good so that moisture stays out.

Were you able to get it for $800? Those are typically over $1000.

The local dealership where I purchased my RT does sell them for over 1,000.00. However, they have an online side of their parts dept called yourmoparparts.com The online part prices are pretty good IMO. It's local for me so no shipping costs. I'm in the OKC metroplex. I paid 784.75 plus 67.68tax for a total of 852.43

Sorry to hear of your luck on this. Maybe try to somehow seal up the damaged one, and keep it as a back up? From what I see, it does not look broken, as much as just cracked. How about a piece of clear contact paper, or similar?

I'll most definitely keep the cracked one for a backup. It's all I focus on when looking at the tailgate. I'm hoping to get the new one in a day or so and replace it.

I wonder if the lighting in the cracked one could be transferred to a unit with the water damage.

I read somewhere you can take them apart so I guess that would be plausible.
UPDATE: I have sh*t for luck. My racetrack light came in this morning. I decided to work on it this evening after watching a few videos. All the videos said the clips would break when taking the inside tailgate panel off. Well, my clips did not break, the panel broke where the clips go in 2 of the places. I have some industrial Velcro and think I can rig it up where that holds the panel on in those 2 places. So, i open the box to look at my new racetrack light and there are two marks on the top that would drive me crazy. They are going to order me another one but it wont be here until next Tuesday because of the holiday. I'll keep everyone posted on my "project", lol

Let me ask, do you think i should put a bead of silicone caulk around the light to help seal it up like this guy?

Mine race track tail light has been letting In moisture since day 1. Got the truck in October. Next time I go in for an oil change and the spoiler recall I'm going to have them order to replace. You would think they would address it after all these years. I'm on my third Durango and every single one has leaked a little bit at some point.

You needed the tools listed on my post to reach in and pop the clips . Yes mine cracked too I used some sound deading material on the inside to fix the crack by kilmat its very sticky and comes in sheets

Yes but the other area that water gets in is the giant hole in the back

Thanks for the info. I haven't taken the light off yet, as I'm waiting for the second one to arrive next week. The gasket on the new one looks to be pretty beefy and much thicker than the one in your pic, although yours could just be compressed. What did you cover the giant hole in the back with?
Stop already. Nothing will come of it.

It is literally already filed, the court documents are there.
