Car Shopping - Not Having Any Fun!

All:

I am currently shopping for my new Durango and having a miserable experience. I thought I was taking the easy approach by conducting my business solely via email, but you can always count on a dealer to make things go awry. For example:

1. One dealer stopped reading my list of required packages and options after the first line and has been spamming my inbox with iPhone pictures of every Durango, no matter the color or trim package, he has on the lot and asking "is this what you want?".

2. One told me that since demand is extremely high, they are only selling Durango's at MSRP.

3. One insists he has a vehicle with red Nappa leather interior and Beats by Dre sound system, even though the factory has yet to ship one.

4. One is telling me that you cannot order a Durango.

Another few days of this and I will buy a damn Nissan Leaf. /rant

For those who know, how difficult is it to install the console after delivery? From reading threads, it seems to be quite an ordeal.

Wait! I just realized something! The Captain's Chairs for the 2nd-row are different for the non-console versions as they have the armrest. So, if I ordered without a console, I would have to add both new seats AND the console when it arrives.

That does not look like a palatable option.

Can't be bad, I bet it has the same footprint as the mini-console. So bolting it down is not an issue. You will have to run the wiring harness to it to get power for the cup holder lights and 12v outlet..again, not hard as I bet it ties into the center console.
Yes, they have the arm rests..which should be easily removed, then you put a colored plug in the hole.
Shoot, with all the custom shops you have access to in California, this is a small problem.

It's always hard I find to get exactly what I want. Usually it's a matter of accepting what they have on the lot and negotiating the price to be more adventageous.

We just leased a new 2015 Durango Limited a few weeks ago, and it had crap on it we didn't want (safety and security group, sunroof, captains chairs, etc), but it's what they had on the lot and they wanted us to take it. So, we made them match the lease price we had on our 2012 that we had just turned back in. They kept saying, "it's $6k more than your old one, it will cost more". And we countered with, "but it's not what we want, and we aren't willing to pay more for this stuff we don't want. If you want to move the car, you will have to match the price". And that is what they did.

I wanted to catch up those of you were diligently following my saga.

I am being told now that I cannot order the red Nappa leather interior unless I am willing to forgo the 2nd-row center console (even in black). Plus, even if I did want that (which I don't), the Durango's are not on allocation and I cannot even place an order.

I am not sure what to believe from these clowns. They all put up so many roadblocks to ordering what I want and then follow up with something on their lot to consider.

It isn't surprising that you can't order red leather with the black console.. the standard order process doesn't allow anything off-menu.

As far as "allocation" I don't know. What usually happens is that orders open on the first of the month, and close when the plant has orders for all they can make in that build timeframe. I don't know if orders have closed for the D this month at this point.

The specific term "allocation," though, usually (IIRC) only applies to dealer stock orders and not customer orders..

So, an update for those fine individuals offering advice:

It appears everything on my list is available (including the red Nappa leather) from the factory EXCEPT the center console for the 2nd-row Captain's Chairs. So now, I have some thinking to do. Here are my options:

1. Take it without the console (my last resort as I want the console).

2. Take it without the red Nappa leather as the black leather version is available (a virtual non-starter as I want my red leather).

3. Wait (oh, I don't do that so well). I have a dealer calling Dodge Monday about future availability.

4. Order it without the console and hope by the time it is delivered, it can be added by the dealer.

By the way, thank you for the build sheet suggestions. I am getting them now.

CK, I'm a little late to this party, but it appears to be true that you can't get the 2nd row console with armrest & storage with the Red Nappa. Not sure why, but that's what the order system indicates. When you have them do the build for you, you should see a sheet exactly like tomk showed you, so that would be the ultimate place to look. Don't place an order without getting one. (my local dealer gave it to me without me even asking)

Pretty Great deal

That is the standard holdback, I haven't done the math. Expensive vehicle ;)

I think that restriction flag was false, this was the pre-order config.. the vehicle was successfully ordered, I'll see if I can find that page..

edit: just found it.. it is called a "Priced Order Confirmation".. I believe that actually happens after your order gets scheduled for build (it has a VIN on it). This was a week after the order, and you'll see it has a price increase on it... which I didn't pay, the dealer got it back from Chrysler.

IMHO 900 below invoice is a decent deal.

When the vehicle configuration is put into the computer, your salesperson should be able to print out something that looks like the attached.. which shows all the various prices..

FWP = factory wholesale price (Invoice)
HB = holdback (money the dealer gets after delivery)
FFP = friends and family (affiliate) price
EP = employee price

Tom:

This is gold! Thank you for this great information. This is exactly what I will ask for. Two questions:

1. The holdback seems very high. Is that the standard holdback?

2. You had one item on restriction (which I know means unavailable). Can they still place the order with something on restriction and it sits in the queue?

Go to one dealership. Negotiate to a good price, almost ready to sign. Then ask to take it for the day. Drive it to another dealership. First guy that talks to you, point at the durango you drove in and tell them it belongs to another dealership. Make it clear you will buy the one you drove in if they don't sell you a car for better.

I went from the sxt (previously negotiated and on a day drive) to limited blacktop with sunroof and captains chairs for $1800 more.

Couldn't an argument be made that prices would go lower?

- Real price from the start rather than negotiable so the starting price would be lower than today's MSRP.
- Manufacturer wouldn't be paying dealership sales incentives.
- No "admin" fees or other dealership fees.

If all the dealerships went away, car companies would still be competing with each other (e.g., Dodge vs. Ford, etc.) so prices wouldn't shoot up across the board.

#38 ·
In the beginning, sure, prices would probably be lower because you would have the manufacturer competing with the dealerships inventory. Once those dealerships inventory is gone and they realize they can't sell any cars because everyone is ordering them directly from the supplier then the manufacturer has much less incentive to keep prices low. Sure they would still have to compete with one another but what happens when you don't want a Chevy Traverse or Ford Explorer and your other option is a Durango? Well then you pay whatever the 1 and only source (manufacturer) of that car says you pay. In the car world right now in that situation you technically have over 2,000 options because that's how many (estimate) Dodge dealers there are.

#33 ·
I know car salesmen and dealerships are a pain in the ass to deal with at times but be careful what you wish for. If car manufacturers were able to sell direct to consumer that is going to put many (if not all) dealerships out of business. Once those dealerships are gone then guess what the manufacturers will do with much, much less competition in the market? Raise prices. You can't have it both ways...everyone loves being able to get 10%-15% off MSRP, but do you know how you're able to do that? Dealers competing for your $$$. With dealers out of the question and you needing a new car you're going to either be driving a much cheaper car or pay a hell of a lot more for your Durango.

All of that would not be good and I didn't even mention what would happen to the overall economy if the roughly 17,000 dealers and their employees in the US were to close their doors.

Yeah, it is pretty brutal.

Me at dealership: "Hello, I've searched province wide for a 2014 Durango with the features I want. Nothing is out there so here's a build sheet from Dodge.com. Order the car, here's the price I'm looking for."
Dealer: "CHECK OUT THIS DURANGO WE HAVE ON OUR LOT!!!!!!!!!! IT'S AMAZING EVERYTHING YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!!!!!"
Me: "Um, it's a 2012... I see no DVD... it's white..."
Dealer: "WHITE IS THE HOTTEST COLOUR. IT's THE NEW BLACK!"
Me: "Please, take this sheet here, see it's all nice and laid out for you, and just order the damn car."
Dealer: "Come on man, I'm struggling here... can't you help me out? Let's work together on this Durango we have on the lot. Ain't she a beaut?"
Me: "Take this sheet. Order the car. Call me when it's ready."
Dealer: "Fine..."

It's like pulling teeth to give them a sale for a $50k+ car.

1. Stop corresponding with that dealer until they change their tune. No one likes spam, but don't let it get to you.

2. Ok, move on.

3. B.S. stinks. You can check their inventory on the Dodge or dealer website.

4. See #3a. Then find a dealer that wants to order one below invoice. If they won't do the pretty standard invoice or 500 below, move on.

I found mine on the build and price summary link to current inventory, changed miles to 200+, and clicked on the vins. Found mine 7 hours drive away since no local dealers would match their price within 2k. I bought a plane ticket and everything for a LOT less than local. I made sure the deal was 99% done and the deposit was 100% refundable if I changed my mind before I went there. Watch out for dealer add ons. If you fly somewhere to buy a car, always have your own ride and keep a cool head when finalizing the deal. Don't get pressured into something you didn't agree on.

The exact opposite was true for my Challenger. No one came close to my local dealer.

Each individual car will have its own pricing based on interested buyers, supply, time on the lot, time of the year, time of the month, etc. .... If you want a high demand exclusive limited run model just released you WILL pay top dollar. Simple econ 101. Supply and demand.

2. One told me that since demand is extremely high, they are only selling Durango's at MSRP.
I LOLed!

Even though I live in Utah I have a surprisingly large number of Dodge dealers within driving distance to choose from. I'll be emailing probably close to 20 dealerships for quotes. Any that respond with typical dealer B.S. like you're getting automatically get thrown into the reject pile. Simple.
