Cannot get auto high-beam dim to work

Hey all.

I posted about this a month or so ago, and I don't know where the post went. Might have been deleted or moved.

In any event, I have the physical headlight knob on the dash turned to AUTO and the Auto High Beam Dim setting clicked ON in the ucconnect, but no joy. Cannot for the life of me figure out why it's not working. Any suggestions? @DodgeCares is there any sort of TSB on this? Vehicle is a 2023 SRT 392 AWD.

Thanks,

Rob

The 2023 Owner's Manual says that Automatic High Beam Headlamp Control is turned on or off in Uconnect and that the headlight switch has to be on the AUTO position. The manual does not say that the High/Low Beam Switch, aka stalk, has to be moved forward to engage automatic high beams.

To the OP, have you tried the steps mentioned in the last bullet point about sensitivity control?

I'll try this tonight. Thanks!

I noticed mine was not working the other night as well. I never have the headlights on Auto so that may be the reason. I'll have to try with the knob on Auto & see if they work.
I have noticed they changed the way the knob works. On my '18 R/T, Auto was all the way left, then off - parking - headlights. Now Off is on the left, then parking - headlights - auto. I liked the old switch arrangement better !!

Did you push the high beam stalk forward to engage the automatic high beams?

Did you read the owners manual to ensure all conditions are met for it to start engaging the high beams automatically?
Yes and yes.

2 more questions

Was it completely dark with no ambient light?
Do you have a 392 base or a 392 plus/premium? It doesnt have the auto high beams on a base fyi

If you still should have it and doesnt work just take to a dealer and have them fix it

Oh, wow. I have a Base! I had assumed it had the auto dim since there’s a setting in the Uconnect preferences for it. Thanks for solving the mystery!

Dodge as the last Hurrah completely decontented models to make more money.
My 21 R/T has everything except the tech package but I would not use it anyway (hate it in my wife's Jeep), I mean who would trust it to park your Durango when UC5 can't connect to the weather. LOL

Not really. You're just too used to having individual options instead of option groups

Because they will have limited supply of certain options they have to pre-purchase they ensure supply by using packages.

Here in Canada it's always been this way with specific option groups and not individual options because the market is 10% of the USA. So because Dodge has to limit the market to close out the production thos is what you get . It's not to make more money it's to not shed money, and don't forget profit comes from cost reduction as well as price increase

Exactly, cost reduction = decontenting and profits = substantial price increases for MY22 and especially MY23 over MY21.

Interesting, I have a base and it's a selection in UConnect + listed as a feature on my window sticker !

Yeah, the fact that there's a UConnect setting for it is why I was convinced I had Auto Dimming but it wasn't working...

You know, I thought you had solved the mystery, but I just looked at my window sticker, and it lists it as a feature despite the fact that my SRT is the base model. The mystery continues, I'm afraid.

This doesn't have anything to do with your headlight issue as that sounds like a service trip to the dealer is in order to get that checked out as it DOES appear that yours isn't working correctly. I know on mine, I don't really like using it because it doesn't dim (or at least in the time frame I would want them dimmed) when approaching traffic going the same direction as me. My concern for you is that your dealer equipped yours with summer tires. I hope you don't have temps below 40 degrees as that will impact your traction.

Yes. Tried everything. I had this feature on my prior daily driver - a 2017 Grand Cherokee Overland - so I'm familiar with all the workings.

Due to parts shortages, maybe your build did not get that feature?
Log into your mopar.com account and go to equipment listing.
Look in your listing and make sure you see this:
AUTO HIGH BEAM HEADLAMP CONTROL

I'll check now.

Buildsheet link will not bring up my SRT :(

However, looking at the 2023 Durango Product Info sheets the auto highbeams are STD on all models except the SXT (not available) and only on the GT if you order the Premium or Plus pkgs.

As I recall, if it's listed on the Monroney (i.e. the window sticker) it HAS to be on the vehicle !!!

Not a DD, but in our newer car, the auto dim high beams only work when the high beams are activated manually. They do not turn on by themselves, they just dim.

Having said that, we never use the auto high beam feature. There are a number of factors that make it trigger from large reflective signs, snow banks, even a couple of mailboxes. Its just a PITA so we stopped using it and just switch manually. It also allows us to turn them off early so they don't blind oncoming traffic - the sensitivity and range are not very accurate and older cars with dim bulbs may not trigger it at all.

Yes, I've done that.

Add mine to the list

Was out driving around tonight & no matter what settings I choose, no auto-dimming.
On my R/T with it set on in Uconnect when I activated the high-beams it displayed a message in the center binnacle: 'auto dimming is activated'.
Not getting that message on the SRT leading me to believe the feature was not installed or not activated in the BCM ??

@RobF any progress with Dodge Cares on yours yet ??

Ugh. That sucks. Sorry we're in the same boat on this. Could this be an endemic dead sensor issue or something?

I PM'd Dodge Cares yesterday with my VIN and software level on Friday per their request. Will probably hear back on Monday. Will keep you posted, brother.

I will PM as well tomorrow. I don't think it's a dead sensor issue as the msg that it's been engaged does not pop up. Thinking they have not turned it on in the software for some reason. $64M question is was this some fat finger mistake or did they 'de-content' the base models on purpose.

Thinking it might be of value to start a thread so others can log their info on this issue. Would be interesting if those built early/before ours or those that get built late have the feature functioning ! Mine has a 5/23 build date & as I recall yours was made around the same time.

I don't use it often either, but I do obviously want it to be in working order.

Not that I can tell & the rain sensing wiper function is normal & I think ?? they share the same camera.

Most telling to me is, there is no message in the center gauge cluster saying "Auto Dimming Activated" when you push the stalk, this leads me to believe it has not been activated via the software & is not a hardware issue.

My '18 R/T had the message, bet your '21 does as well. It only pops up for a few seconds, so you have to watch when you push that stalk !
