Brake Warning Light

The brake warning light goes on after a few minutes of driving. The faster I go the quicker it comes on. Originally thought it was the parking brake switch but I don't think so because when that comes on the alarm starts ringing. When the light comes on there are no other sounds or warning lights. Connected a code reader and there are no error codes.

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this light to come on? Brakes are worn but I didn't think there was any detection system for that. Fluid level is fine.

Thanks in advance.

Might be a faulty parking brake switch, which is shown as four in the parts breakdown and the picture below. Here is the Mopar part number: 4221463

Take a look at the attached troubleshooting guide to see if it helps you find the problem. This came from the Chilton Library for free via my public library's website. Most public libraries offers it. Just log into your public library's website and search for Chilton. You will also find the wiring diagrams for your Durango.

I'm in the Plymouth, MN dealer parts zone.

Brake Fluid Level Sensor
68102030AB, list price is $30.95.

Get a little needle-nose pliers. That's all you'll need.

Raise the hood, unclip the vacuum hose cover, the cowl seal, and unscrew the plastic washer holding the cowl seal directly in front of the master cylinder. Set the seal and cover to the side.

Disconnect the sensor pigtail, pinch the ends of the sensor together, pull it out. Push the new one in; it snaps into place. Reconnect the sensor.

Start her up, and go on happily about your day.

It's got a be in the hydraulic system somewhere. Only other things that might cause it would be a bad MC, or maybe even a bad (or misadjusted) brake light switch. A bad parking brake switch would illuminate the parking brake light, not the brake light. Anything else (wheel speed sensors, etc) would fall under the ABS system, and you'd get an ABS light to keep the brake light company.

OEM was Rostra. RockAuto has a Rostra #620067 for a grand total of $11. The same exact part with Mother's label on it runs $35. Both are showing available.

RA also has the Mopar MC #68207364AA for $189. It appears to include the reservoir (kit).

Well I'm more confused now than ever. My car doesn't have a parking brake warning light, only a brake warning light. When I stop on the parking brake it starts blinking when you shift into drive.

When I have the problem I mentioned the light comes on and stays on. The alarm sounds just once. If I step on the parking break while I'm still driving once the light goes on the alarm sounds continuously until I release the brake. The alarm stops and the light stays on.

Again if i stop the car but leave the engine running there are no fault codes. Once I turn it off (even for a second) the light stays off when I restart it (but comes on after driving for 5-20 minutes).

During all this time the car drives normally. Brakes are worn but no noises or any scoring marks on the rotors (well, on the outside anyway). Brake fluid level is fine.
