We have 2018 citadel with Hemi and 33,000 miles. Had it paid off for a long time and we have no intention of trading anytime soon. In fact I’d like to keep this Durango at least another 7-8 years or more. We only put about 7-8K a year on it for mileage so it would still be low mileage. Anyway my reason for the post is this, with all the snow and then subsequent salt we have had here lately as I was washing the salt off the Durango at the car wash the other day and trying to spray underneath as good as I could I wondered what the body would look like in eight years or so when this vehicle is over 10 years old. Has anyone noticed any rust prone areas on this third-generation Durango design? I know this forum is just back to 2014 but anyone seen any 2011s 12s and 13s with problems? I know that the rocker panels are a composite material as is the front fascia and back fascia, so that would pretty much just leave the doors and the fender wells as areas that could have a problem. Just curious. Thanks.

Where do you live? The rust belt road treatments will eat any car in 10-15 years, no matter who made it. Have you considered getting a Fluid Film coating or something similar sprayed on the underbody at the start of every winter? That's probably the only thing that'll for sure protect from the salt and spray other than visiting a car wash that has under body spray regularly.

From my pre-purchase research, Durango don't seem to be particularly rust prone.

Rust is only seen (so far on this forum) on the much older Gen 1 and Gen 2 models, but that is mostly due to the years they were hammered with salt. Gen 3 doesn't have those reports yet but give them time. The oldest Gen 3 is 11 years old so they seem to be holding up better or they get traded and resold in the sunbelt more often. My '16 came from Maryland in year 4 and it only had a little corrosion underneath and none in the engine compartment. There have been a couple of Gen 3s posted that have a lot of corrosion on the front of the engine so those really get a lot of salt and it shows.

I was shocked at how little rust was on my 2014 sold with 136k miles absolutely no panel rust . Just some of the large metal components in the steering rack and suspension. Even those were just minor surface rust. It was driven from NY to VT for at least 6 to 8 trips a year chasing snow storms for family snowboard trips .

My (previous) 2012 DDRT had some issues:
  1. passenger replaced door skin due to rusting from inside (repaired under warranty)
  2. paint bubbling on leading edge of the hood
  3. hole in drivers front quarter panel near wheel well
  4. paint bubbling on rear hatch just to the right of the left taillight and under the trim panel where the camera is mounted
  5. paint bubbling on the corner seams on inside of front doors
I hope my 2021 DDRT holds up better

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I was mostly just trying to see if there were areas that have been rust prone on the 3rd gen design that people had seen. On pick up trucks I know where all the rust prone areas are, the 04-08 Dodge’s all rusted above the wheel wells every single one of them. The 04-14 F150s, which I have an 04, all rusted in the cab corners of the crew cabs. And GMs all rust above the wheel wells. And the 09+ Dodges rust in the rocker panels real bad. I was just seeing if there were areas on these that had been prone to it.

My 2018 RT is going in for the third time due to rust in middle of both front doors, it starts on the inside.

I’m on my 3rd Durango. The rust starts as bubbling under the paint by the gas tank. More shows up by the back door. When you pass a Durango, especially if it’s about 6-7 years old. Check out the area below the gas tank. You will see it in every last one of them.

I never had a rust issue on my Mopars (since 1992) except my 2015 Ram which started om the inside lip of the rear wheel well.
I always look at 14' & up Durangos I see on the road for signs of rust and I do not see any which I like. This is in salt heaven NJ during the winter.

I'm on my 3rd one as well, never had rust issues, not saying they cannot have issues but my 2013 I sold in 2022 sat outside 95% of its life, no issues below the gas tank so it isn't every last one of them.

Joejoe is just a whiner.
