U-joints and pinion bearing would be my first off-hand guess with this info.

Thanks guys! I'll be looking under it this weekend to see if I can determine what it is. Will oil each component 1 at a time to see if it temporarily stops. Dumb question, but is the pinion bearing in the diff?

Very funny! Actually it's Friday morning and we have a lot of other things to get done that weekend and there's no way I can squeeze this in. Sorry. Maybe next time.

 

pumped some oil all over the first u-joint south of the transfer case, chirping stopped, found the culprit. The joints look like the circlip variety. Are these easy to replace?

 

Yes. Takes about a half hour with simple hand tools.
