I'm at 140k miles and would like to avoid pulling the transmission. Does anyone have experience with slip-in bands?

Will the heads of the old one need to be grinded off? I guess the ends of slip-in bands must be flexible to be pushed or pulled through tight spots around the drum.

I had slippage between 1st and 2nd, did not adjust the front band in time and the piece between the adjuster and the band fell down and blocked the space for the reverse gear actuator.

I've never heard of slip in bands before, but I am not a trans expert. Hopefully one of our resident trans gurus will chime in. Have you tried adjusting the bands? They require adjustment every 30ish k. Sadly, this is something that Dodge has not done a good job of telling Dodge owners, so many have no idea about it.

I did one in a Cummins 2500 once. It was pretty easy. I don't remember all of the details as it was some years ago, but I am no trans expert. The replacement "slip in band" was thinner than the original and didn't last more than 7k miles, but it did last 7k miles.....It'll give you a little life extension, but you'll need to get a real band in there sooner rather than later.

No such thing as a slip in band for a 44, 46RLE trans. The screw adjuster for the band is on the outside of the trans. If you can move things back in place and put the strut back in then adjust the band. Other than that the trans has to come apart. 140k is allot of miles for that trans.

I did manage to change the kickdownband on my 46RE from under the car. Not a slip in, just an original band.
With a hammer and big screwdriver and only a little/gentle force it went past the tight spots.

Many said its not possible, you have to customized the notch, but it worked out to be possible anyway. Be patience , take your time, wear good gloves, this bands are sharp.

Bought a band at rockauto, which only differents from original that the nothes are longer. Watch out that the side where the notch is not all the way to the side points to the front of the car. Otherwise you have like me cut a bit away while under the car with a grinder so it becomes like the original.

Hey Gonzo, just wondering if you had any more info on the band you installed. How did u press the tooth on the band so it would fit? I have been looking into a slip-on band but have had no luck in finding one. Anyways sorry to revise this old thread, don't see a way to reach people on the profile page.

Thanks for the reply Gonzo.

Interesting, so you used the original band. Did you tap and hammer the clips of the band or tap and hammer the band once you had started it on the drum?

How many miles have you gone on your new band? I was reading about grinding the ears or hammering them down a bit. Or using a vise but that would have to be done carefully so as not to damage the inside material or bend out of round.

To get the notch past the tight spots i put the big screwdriver on it and with a little force with the hammer i jammed it past. Its very little, about half a milimeter ,maybe not even that, that you are short.
The aluminium of the housing will give in without damage. It easier than it sounds.
But wear thick gloves, you have to wiggle and push this bands and they are sharp.

Figured I would add/ confirm to this post. I just did this. I had done the servo and gov upgrades fearing it might cause me other issues on this poor transmission and it did. few miles after the upgrade I lost second. Pulled the VB and yep, forward band was now only metal. Saw this post thought ok well maybe its possible to slide in a new one. with a little persuasion I yanked it out via the passenger side. I did not purchase a "slip on" band because I figured if I can get the original out I can get it in. So I ordered a stock band. My dumb ass did not pay attention to the direction of the band when I pulled it out. With some persuasion and finesse I was so excited I was able to slide the new one in, however it was backwards. Pay attention to how it is before you remove it. I was able to yank it back out. However I could not for the life of me get it back in. So figuring the notch was key I decided to notch the other side. Started small and was not able to get it in. I kept trying while each attempt I would cut that notch just a little more. I was not able to get it in until the notch was almost the same as the factory one on the opposite side. I got rather good at getting it in and out. Starting at the passenger side slide the band in untill you cant. use a screwdriver and tap it past that point. Then again it will stick for a second section. Again tap it through with hammer and screwdriver. next place it jams is about half way. From here keep finessing it back and forth with as much pressure as you can force by hand pushing it in. It will go with some patience. it will probably stick one more time but use the same process of finesse and force making sure the band end is forward. if you made it this far you should be able to get it. if you are stuck in the last position you probably need to grind a little more. My transmission now shifts great with proper band adjustment. Not a rebuild but it shifts good for now. Good Luck.
