I had to locate a used pump for my 01 D with 4.7 because the reservoir was cracked and the used pump I got at the salvage yard had a cooler attached to it, my 01 didn't come with one. did certain years get one? what's it primarily for? could I add it to mine with no problems?
Thanks!

It just helps cool the hydraulic fluid and yeah, you should be able to use it. You'll just need to plumb it in. I think it came with the heavy duty cooling package that was an option.

The auxiliary power steering cooler was part of the "optional" Heavy Duty Service Package available for any Gen 1. It also included an auxiliary tranny cooler, heavy duty shocks and larger sway bars. If you ordered the "optional" Towing Package, it included the Heavy Duty Service Package and Heavy Duty Electrical Package (larger alternator and battery.)

I have that, it's part of the Heavy Duty Group.
Definitely use it if you can.

PULLEY

    (2) Remove pulley from pump with Puller C-4333 (fig. 7)
INSTALLATION
  • CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with the 4.7L, don't reuse the old power steering pump pulley, it's not intended for reuse. A new pulley must be installed if removed.

    (1) Replace pulley if bent, cracked, or loose.
    (2) Install pulley on pump with Installer C-4063-B (fig. 8) flush with the end of the shaft. Ensure the tool and pulley remain aligned with the pump shaft.
    (3) Install pump assembly, (refer to 19 - STEERING/PUMP 4.7L - INSTALLATION or STEERING/PUMP 5.9L - INSTALLATION.)
    (4) With Serpentine Belts in place, run engine until warm (5 min) and note any belt chirp. If chirp exists, move pulley outward approximately 0.5 mm (0.020".) If noise increases, move pulley inward 1.0 mm (0.040".) Be careful that pulley doesn't contact mounting bolts.

Thanks Tom! I ruined my original pump trying to replace the pulley, it rounded the shaft pretty badly. the 01 service manual says to use a different type of puller? I wish I'd known to used it sooner! I guess this is a later, revised version and it sounds like a PITA get it aligned properly after you take off the pulley!
