2023 Dodge Durango Hellcat - A Last Hurrah?

Most of you are in one of the four Durango Hellcat groups on Facebook so this isn't new, but I wanted to start a thread to hopefully keep updated with any relevant information.

Let me add to the rumor mill a bit with a discovery over the weekend. While checking a VIN for a DDHC being parted out by Schram Auto Parts I noticed it was actually a 2023 model. Naturally, I dug a bit deeper and found at least 14 2023 Dodge Durango Hellcats that Dodge produced as "vehicle development pilots." Why would Dodge build pilot vehicles with 2023 VIN numbers? Was 2023 the original model year planned for the DDHC and Dodge pivoted and pulled it forward to 2021 and as such all other pilot vehicle VINs are 2021s as they were produced after the 2023s?
Who knows, but here is a little bit more about how these 2023 pilots were configured...
  • All of them list Rear Seat Reminder Alert as standard (new feature)
  • Half were White Knuckle while the other half were DB Black
  • All but one was built with Demonic Red Leather
  • The only option on the one with Black interior was the Lightweight Package
  • All of them had Blind Spot / Cross Path as standard (similar to 2022)
  • All but the one with zero options were built with sunroofs, roof rails, roof cross bars, cargo compartment shade, and the Trailer Tow IV group.
  • Some were built with Forged Carbon Fiber Interior Accents but not the rest of the Premium Interior Group features
  • All of them had a "Restricted Models/Options" line item
  • No differences listed for engine, transmission, driveline, etc. (same as 2021 build sheets)
  • These will not be saleable units as Dodge has several rounds of pre-production builds, with the last round usually having some saleable units closer to production (similar to the 2021 DDHC pre-production units that have been hitting the auto auction scene with 500XXX VINs).
I wouldn't get too excited about this discovery, but it may be another small hint of a last hurrah for the DDHC in 2023. I guess we will have to see what they announce in the middle of August when they talk more about future models.

IMO ADM isn't dirty dealing....its the free market at work. We don't have to like it, but it's a hallmark of the anti-trust and anti-price fixing laws that promotes competition.

Not sure what BMW may have done but manufacturers have to be careful; they can get themselves into hot water if they try to control dealer pricing (vertical price fixing)....

Dealers are the customers of the manufacturers. Consumers are the customers of the dealers, not of the manufacturers. How would we like it if the manufacturers told us what we could resell our cars for? Or...how would we like it if the manufacturers could forbid dealers from selling below MSRP? It cuts both ways....

Brake dust aside, the stock Brembo setup performs extremely well at the track. I have driven the tires off my DDHC at Road Atlanta and VIR and not once experienced brake fade. I switch back to the Powerstop performance ceramics when I return home from the track to avoid the brake dust issue for the other 355 days a year.

Of course, it still comes with Brembo pads.

Mopar Monday Stats - July 31, 2023 - DDHC production has averaged about 50 units since my last update. Production total just passed 1550 with just over 1500 shipped (my data lags a bit). All 2023 colors are now in production with a few Red Oxide and Night Moves DDHCs being produced. The BIG NEWS is that the suede headliner has returned to the Premium Trim configuration and is listed on the window sticker. It looks like it went into production in mid-July with VINs higher than 666XXX, but I am still working to confirm the exact cut in. As a result Dodge increased the Premium Trim cost by $305 and I still need to confirm that that includes suede A-post covers as well (I assume it does.) Nothing else new to report except a few random line items that show up in build sheets. In the last two weeks most of the build sheets show a "3.8L BADGE" a few lines below the "6.2L S/C HEMI V8 SRT ENGINE." Maybe Dodge is preventing theft by down badging DDHCs! (I think it is just a configuration error) The other weird line item I saw recently was "CLONED VEHICLE TRACKING." Enjoy your week!

See my update post above. The suede headliner thing is still a mystery as it is far from consistent. I will add to my tracker going forward how many get suede headliners.

Mopar Monday Stats - August 14, 2023 - DDHC production continues at a clip of about 40 per week. Production total recently surpassed 1660 units (my data lags a bit). Dodge finally updated the allocation list on July 25 and only 65 dealers remain (the original list last November had 743). 451 DDHCs are showing as "available" in the US on the Dodge website. No change for Canada in the last two weeks. The suede headliner mystery continues as I have not cracked the code yet as not every Premium Trim DDHC built recently receives the suede headliner. They aren't prioritized to sold versus dealer stock orders or to certain colors. Be lucky if your build gets one is all I can say. With Base Trim models being built now I inserted a bar chart into the options chart which highlights options on those builds. Nothing confirmed for 2024 just yet and I am still trying to find out if 2023 production will run until the end of December. Stay tuned!

This suede headliner thing is really been a bummer for my DDHC ownership so far.. i was absolutely expecting it when i ordered a premium and was very disappointed when it arrived without it. I thoroughly enjoy my DDHC but everytime I get in it that one little thing just it like nails on a chalkboard. If anyone has Tim K's email that could PM me i would appreciate it.. id like to share my experiance with this with him.. thank you!

Mopar Monday Stats - August 28, 2023 - DDHC production has surpassed 1800 units (my data lags as always). Not sure if Dodge is pushing the high profit stuff out before the possible strike or what as production last week was nearly double the previous several weeks. Over 540 units showing on Dodge's website with more dealer stock orders being built daily it seems. I still haven't cracked the suede headliner option code as there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to which Premium Trims will get it and which ones won't. I did confirm that DDHCs built with the suede headliner do get the matching A-post covers as well (as the should). Have a great week and enjoy a few decent shots of a Vapor Gray DDHC as a bonus!

I found a few more Suede headliner equipped vehicles when I was calling around today. Despite the increased volume hitting lots most in my area are not budging on their 'market adjustments'. One dealer quoted me 30k over on the phone. They called me back later and came down to 5k over.

Mopar Monday Stats - September 11, 2023 - A day we will never forget - DDHC production soldiered on as JNAP closes in on 2,000 units produced for the model year (my data lags a bit). The BIG news for those that haven't heard is that the DDHC will continue into the 2024 model year along with the TRX as the only Hellcat-powered vehicles left. The Hellcat-powered TRX will cease production on December 31, 2023, but the DDHC should continue for the entire model year. Only change for 2024 is that Vapor Gray will no longer be offered. 2024 production should start November 6, but that is heavily dependent on the pending UAW strike. Random factoid for this week is the first ever Destroyer Gray DDHC with Bright Blue Mopar dual stripes rolled off the line, there hasn't been one with that combo in two years worth of production. Dealer inventory continues to pile up with nearly 600 either on lots, in transit, or being built. Enjoy your week!

So, back in 2020 when I ordered mine, I ordered it with the Lightweight package and in Vice White . . . Clark says there is only one other vehicle that comes close to the order combination I have, and that one has blue stripes . . . since I got it, though, I had the suede inserts replaced with real black leather, and added a set of 3rd-row seats, so now I have the ability to haul around 6 passengers with me :)

A '21 with 1300 miles sold on Bring a Trailer today for $77,000.

Another data point. I just picked up my custom order 2023 Durango Hellcat, in Triple Nickel, base model with lightweight package.

The dealer tore up my original ADM deal and we went back to something more reasonable. There has been a change in the market, for sure.

I thought Vice White was a great color (and it still is), but Triple Nickel is pretty nice as well. No pics yet because we are having torrential rain. When the sun comes out again, I will try to post some.
