Well, I waited a while and ordered a set of rims again. The order was cancelled this AM due to being on backorder with no ETA.

 

Ordered the steel wheels through my dealer yesterday. They said they are still back ordered, but quoted a 1 week lead time. We'll see if it happens.

 

The police center caps show up as available on the Mopar e-Store as of today. I got my order in this evening.

 

Well, here they are. Had to pay through the nose for them. Now onto the next step of designing a retro looking dog dish cap.

 

I don't like how much the cap sticks out given the high offset, so will design it to be inset and hug the contours of the steel like the modern police center cap does.

 

Love the old school center caps, had them on my ‘85 Diplomat. Are you not using the new center caps? Any idea if we need to get special lug nuts for the newer design caps to work?

 

I would like to design a new cap that looks like the old one, but attaches the same as the new one. I ordered one new cap so I can take some measurements from it and study the retention features.

 

They seem to fit fine. Got about 1/2" of clearance between the outside of the caliper and inside of the rim. Clearance at face of caliper is tighter at about 3/8".

 

For you SRT/Brembo Bois (@flyingcesar), the inside of the wheel starts at 17-1/4" diameter and narrows to 16-1/2" where the rim is welded to the center (right where it is closest to the caliper). I am thinking these may be a no-go for you.

 

This is what I'm thinking as well. Even though the Mopar site says the wheel is compatible with SRT and SRT Hellcat, I asked for more info from the local Dodge parts department.

Apparently the parts system can look up these wheels, and it actually lists the compatible brakes.

I have a 2021 SRT 392, standard Brembo brakes (not the upgraded 2-piece rotors).

After checking my VIN, parts confirmed that my SRT brakes are not listed for this steel wheel.

Of course I will be happy if they fit, but it doesn't look like it.

 

Too bad the wheels on my 1953 Willys won't fit. These tall skinny bias-ply gougers would be fun for about 15 minutes.

 

The 2021 DD Pursuit center cap I ordered came in yesterday. It is 2" smaller diameter than the old style dog dish cap. I will get cranking in CAD to see if I can meld the two designs for a retro looking cap that fits the new wheels.

The new one snaps onto large bosses of the open end lug nut. I looked at ordering the Mopar lug nuts but they list at $11/ea. I instead opted for a two packages of the identical Dorman 611-979 for $19.35/pkg of ten from Walmart.com.

 

So I have my snow tires on hand and everything else I need except the stinking nuts that hold the metal valve stem TPMS sensors in place. They are back-ordered, but should be in soon. I went with the TPMS sensors with metal valve stems since the rubber stemmed ones stipulated that they are for 20" wheels only. Not sure why...

I ended up buying a set of Cooper Evolution Winter tires in 265/60R18 from simpletire.com. This thing should be a beast in the snow. I ordered them early as I don't want any COVID delays getting in the way of my mobility! Unexpectedly, these tires were made in Tupelo, MS.

Nice! I got the TPMS with the metal valve stems and have them in hand. The metal ones have an adjustable angle between the valve stem and the rim allowing you to position the sensor flat against the inside of the rim. I've been waiting on the nuts to secure the valve stems (they do not come with the valve stems) for over a month. They should be arriving today or tomorrow (ordered from mopar online, fulfilled and shipped from my local dealer parts desk). Then I will have everything I need to get my tires mounted.

FWIW, the dog dish caps DO snap on to the original chrome (closed top) lug nuts without issue, but I imagine they would scrape the chrome off over time and harbor moisture and salt during the winter, so I would still recommend a separate set of the Dorman lug nuts I mentioned above. The chamfer angle and the OD of the top of the chamfer that the hub cap attaches to is the same for both the chrome nut and the aftermarket.

Do the center caps snap onto the lugs? Would these possibly fit on the old standard stamped steelies

 

@Shinroc The old dog dish caps will not fit the modern wheels. The new style police caps snap onto ridges on the lug nuts. I have made a CAD model of the old dog dish caps. Now I just need to modify the CAD model to snap on the lugs like the new ones do and get them made.

Looking good! I'm finally getting a winter set for my 2013 Durango. But I'll be running the 18x8 steel wheels for the full size spares. I plan on going with 285/60/18 BFGoodrich All Terrain T/As. Would these caps still fit those wheels?

How is adapting the old school dog dish cap coming? I plan on doing that to mine. Was hoping to paint my steel wheels body color(True Blue Pearl) and having the old school chrome caps.

I installed my winter setup today. I went with Firestone Winterforce CUV tires $145/ea on Amazon and used Standard Motor Products rubber stem TPMS sensors (P/N TPM298), along with the Dorman lug nuts. I cut out some vinyl to black out the center of the hub caps for a little custom look.

I am digging the vinyl too. Did you hand cut or do you have a computer controlled paper/vinyl cutter?

 

I used my wife’s Cricut vinyl cutting machine. I just imported the Dodge rhombus symbol in and overlayed it to a circle. The fit isn’t perfect, but it’s good enough.

I appreciate the posting of part numbers at the beginning of this thread. Does anyone know if this setup, with the exception of the TPMS sensors, will work for a 2014 R/T? The Mopar site lists 21,22 only, but I can’t seem to find any dimensional difference between them. Thanks

 

I believe this will work just fine on a 2014 R/T. The bolt patterns are the same. The Mopar site says 2021/2022 because these wheels and center caps were first available on those models and for whatever reason they don't cite the backwards compatibility.

 

Basically order all of the part numbers I show in the 1st post with the exception of the TPMS as I believe the 2015 requires TPMS that run on a different frequency. You can find your TPMS part number at store.mopar.com
