2018 R/T Cold Start Knock

As a rule of thumb, I always start my vehicles and let them run for at least a few minutes before heading down the road. Since my R/T has remote start, I've been using it in the mornings before leaving the house and at work before heading home.

Last week I forgot to hit the remote starter so I started it up normally and stood outside while it ran for a couple minutes. After 30-60 seconds I started hearing a knocking sound which seemed like it was coming from the bottom of the engine. It's easiest to hear from under the car or through the passenger-side wheel well. Not so much a tick as a knock (deeper tone).

After a couple minutes of run time, the knock subsides and does not return as long as the engine is reasonably warm. I've intentionally started the car 'in-person' since and it does this every single cold (sitting 8-hours or more) start.

1. Engine start, elevated but smooth, quiet idle
2. Idle lowers, engine still runs quiet and smooth
3. After 30-60 seconds, a knock can be heard and will get progressively louder
4. After 2-5 minutes of run time, the knock lessons and eventually cannot be heard.

I found this video while searching around and I think it exactly captures my problem. Mine behaves identical to this.

Current mileage of my R/T: 3,500

I don't think it's a manifold issue because it doesn't sound like an exhaust leak to me. The noise cannot be heard as clearly from the top. As I mentioned, it's much more apparent from underneath or from the passenger wheel well.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Oil level is good and clean. It was changed by the dealership at 3K miles. They said they used blended 5W-20 but I do not know the filter they used off-hand. I would assume Mopar.

Got mine back today and the noise is gone. They had the truck two days, but I don't know what time they actually started the work on day one.

Great dealer experience all around!

I'll leave the same post in both threads about this. Just my two cents.

This isn't a new issue for Dodge, nor an issue only affecting Rams and Durangos. Prior to my DD, I had a '13 Charger R/T Blacktop. Not only did multiple exhaust manifold bolts break, causing this loud tick or knock sound, but they were notorious for loosening up, and sapping power. So we were constantly checking, and re-torquing these bolts to factory specs, which would often cause them to break. It got to the point where I stopped doing it myself, and would ask the dealer to tighten them up when I went in for service. That still almost always resulted in at least one broken and replaced bolt, always covered under warranty, and never at a cost to me. I can only assume this is a result of the small bolt size.

One of the best videos I have seen on car repairs!

I'm a bit of a safety freak, so I hope that you had a solid stand under the car in addition to only the hydraulic lifter!?
Either way for anyone with this issue take time to watch Chase300's video, link in an ealier post. (I have been out of town for weeks and first saw it now)

I have the lifetime warranty so I hope not to have to go under this car ever :) but I do these types of repairs on my "Toy cars".

One question though: have you found any other changes with the car after this repair? Mileage, no rough running or?

Great Job! Do you have a list of the tools you bought for the job? including the 90 degr drill?

Thanks

The Dealer did my repair, but I swear I am getting better gas mileage (1-2 mpg) and the truck seems to run smoother than ever.

My 12 ram had the same issue. I thought lifter tick until looking into it further. Mine started around 70k. My Durango made some strange noise this morning, but wasn’t the exhaust tick. I am hoping it’s ok. It only has 19k miles on it.

UPDATE:

I put another few thousand miles on my R/T since the dealer and I agreed what we were hearing was the normal, harmless Hemi Tick. Recently, the tick seems to have gotten worse. Not only does it last longer than before, it's noticeably louder. To give an idea, I had the Durango parked across the street at home and when I remote-started it you could clearly hear the ticking from the garage (approximately 40ft away).

My Durango is currently at the dealership for a recall but I dropped it off last night so we could all listen to the cold start this morning. Sure enough it started ticking; although not as loud as some of the other times. The mechanic said he thinks it's a lifter but wanted to confirm. He was a younger guy and seemed eager to solve the problem.

Hopefully they get somewhere with it this time.

I would be willing to bet $20 it's the exhaust manifold bolts. Sounds exactly like my scenario. Many dealers don't want to do it because it's a pain in the butt to do I guess? Not sure.

Hope you can get it sorted it out.

These Hemi ticking things have been around a while, and seems hard to pin point. The Charger community also goes through this, and it sounds almost identical. I posted on the DC forum about the manifold bolts, but haven't heard anyone really come back with an answer yet.

While over here, we have several members that have diagnosed it to the manifold. Not sure what the difference is between the two platforms. But from what I'm hearing, it is easy for these to break, at least on the DD. Whatever it is, let us know.

Small Update:

Friday the dealership called and asked if they could keep my Durango over the weekend and thru today. The shop foreman is of the belief that there is piston slap but needs to zero in on which piston it is. If they in fact do identify piston slap and narrow down a location, they intend to replace said piston.

I was talking to my Dad and a friend. Both brought up the same question: at that point why not just replace the motor? With the newness of the vehicle and low mileage (~8K), wouldn't that make more sense?

They are 100% positive all manifold bolts are in tact.
