2017 Transmission Shift problem, help please.

I did a search and there are tons of posts on hard shifting and my issue seems just a bit different.
I have noticed a hard shift from 2-3rd. I figured it was because the transmission was cold. It only does it once then it's fine for the rest of the day.

Yesterday it shifted and it felt like a slam then the check engine light came on. The transmission was stuck in 3rd gear and wouldn't shift up or down. The paddle shifters wouldn't work either. The transmission would shift to park and reverse. I pulled over shut the engine off and restarted the car. The transmission worked after that. I got the check engine light cleared but the mechanic said he didn't see any codes.

Any clue what's going on? This thing is about to find its self sitting on a car lot if it doesn't straighten out.

Well, it won't straighten out on it's own. At the very least, and especially if you are at 75K miles or more, you should do the ZF recommended fluid change. If that doesn't correct things then it may be a problem internal to the trans.

If you plan to diagnose yourself, get alfaobd or diagfca software and an OBDII interface so you can see if any TCM codes are pending.

So I contacted a couple of garages here in Gallup NM where I'm working. They won't even consider it. Told me I would have to go to the dealership.
So I contacted a dealership here, turned me down said they were backed up, wouldn't even consider booking for the future. Called a dealership at home in Kansas, got a quote... $1400! I told him I would pass and use the funds towards a down-payment. He actually laughed and said "I don't blame you"
And I will be going to a car lot next Monday. See you later Dodge :(

This is key to figuring out the problem...never clear the code without knowing what it was...and you don't get false check engine lights, so some code was attached to it...dang hammerhead mechanic!
As an FYI, I have a friend with a BMW 5 series that was having like rough shifts from his ZF trans...turns out it was being caused by a misfire in the engine.

Thanks for the advise. I was standing next to the mechanic when he checked for a code, he showed there were no faults. The hard shift in my transmission happens once or twice a day after the car has been sitting for a long period, like over night or while at work. Once it gets past that initial hard shift it shifts up and down fine. I was almost leaning towards a bad valve in the transmission.
Thanks again for the advise.

Some scanners don't show trans faults...but I'd assume your mechanic has a good scanner that can display all codes.
I certainly don't think its old, dirty fluid...but you could have it checked to make sure the level is correct.
But yeah, maybe something within the valvebody...I assume its the 845rfe trans with the V6?

Then you have the ZF.

Sorry to hear you are having this issue. I hope you get it figured out, and keep your D around. I bought my first one and sold it 6 years later on a whim. Since then, I am on D #3. For the money, I can't see anything else out there that offers the same value. If you get rid of it, you'll miss the sound and torque of the Hemi.

Oh I do love the D, and it's a lot of fun to drive. This one seems to have a ton of gremlins. This is just the latest in a list of problems. I'm on my fourth water pump. The mechanics I have been to can't figure out why it keeps going out of alignment and eating tires. The electronics have started going crazy. The AC froze up and the mechanic said the system is full.and the list goes on. Time to get a bike or better shoes for walking 😆🤣😂

Myriad of electrical gremlins in Durangos are pegged directly to the car battery. If yours is several years old you should replace it while making sure the cables are clean and tight and that the chassis ground in the battery compartment is tightly connected.
