I just bought 2005 Durango SLT 4.7L few weeks ago from a rental company.
When I brought my truck home and did some checking the tranny was a mess. I don't think they ever changed the trans fluid since it was new.The fluid was just heavy black sludge. The truck runs OK on flat ground, but when you go up the hill I have to rev it up high to hardly move.Steep hill..forget it. It won't even move a bit in D. When I switch the gears to lower gear 3/2 it runs fine. I changed the fluids, filters and so on,but no improvements. Any suggestion what could be wrong. Thanks for any suggestions. :D

If the fluid is as bad as you say I wonder if the torque converter isn't sledged up too. Just dropping the pan and doing a fluid/filter swap does not get all the fluid out of the converter. You may need to flush the fluid from there as well.

Unfortunately a flush may not be the answer either. I'd worry about getting sludge or particulate lodges in the valve body or a fluid channel. Did you use ATF+4 by the way?
