Things to eyeball:

TCCM (under the dash by the steering column)
JB fuse 11
PDC fuse A

also look around for some loose wires ect...

Some folks experienced an issue where the T case would switch to 4 Low on its own while driving. If this is the case, the previous owner may have disconnected the T case shift motor harness connector to remove power from it. The T case motors are somewhat rare and pricey as the demand has dropped over time. The issue could also be a bad TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module).

Im having the same troubles on a recent 01 SLT 5.9 purchase... NO lights on the switch... Service 4WD light was on until I reset the computer and it hasn't returned. I haven't done much testing yet but the first thing I will do when in finally stops raining is check the fuses... then unplug the harness at the tcase and check for voltage.

 

... btw... my problem was solved by getting a new (reman) TCCM blue box under the dash at the right kneecap.
