I just purchased the Durango off lease from a used dealership, 47,000 miles. The vehicle came from another state so I'm guessing was sold at auction for some reason. I might be finding out why. First month, I found the coolant was nearly empty. I think the dealer didn't fill it, so I added to the full line. Next I wanted to make sure the oil had been changed I had it changed. I have never taken off the oil fill cap, just the dipstick. I checked the oil later and smelled some fuel smell, which I'm told is normal with my short distance driving, usually 2-3 miles one way to work and 2-3 miles back. About 7 out of 14 days. Well I made an appointment at a neighboring dealership in another town not the local dealer as I like the 5 star dealer and prefer them. They flushed and filled, the transmission, and radiator, and also changed the oil. I asked about the spark plugs and wires, they said they checked them out and they seemed fine. I have an extended warranty so I want to try to maintain as best as possible. I was getting ready to take a 225 mile round trip so I checked the oil fill, wow, I saw a suprise, I found foam, it appeared like a light brown frothy mix, I grabbed a rag and wiped it out. I became worried about it and came online and found out it's a common problem due to the angle of the oil fil cap or something?
So I noticed the fuel smell is in my oil again, my oil is clean, doesn't appear burnt at all. Nice and clean. I noticed the other day when I pulled into the drive and let it idle while I was getting things together to get out of the vehicle it nearly died on me, so I called the dealership and asked for an appointment, the guy asked me if the idle bumped up when I turned on the A/C. I told him I wasn't sure, and he said he could get me in the next day, I had to decline and request a few days later. That day I went and got a new air filter, and changed it out, the old one was quite dirty, I also put in some fuel treatment. I had bought the 87 grade fuel from a Casey General Store. I usually run the 89 or higher. maybe It was the 89 and I usually run 90 either way it was lower grade without 10% Ethanol. I took it to the dealer, he said the idle was normal 450rpm when no load, and about 650 rpm when the A/C was on, said if I had no engine check lights he didn't see charging me $35 to put it on the computer, so he charged me nothing and told me the computer was working correctly and it was all controlled by the chips nothing he could do.
I mentioned the fuel smell on the dipstick and the foam in the oil fill, he said that the oil should't be smelling like gas, the gas tank was located in the back of the vehicle and should be kept there, he said the foam could have been an additive or engine cleaner working its way out overtime, he asked what my oil change intervals were like. I'm still like 2,000 from being due. I told him and he said just remind us next time you're here and we'll see, it could have been an additive to clean the engine. I thanked him and asked him what I owed him, he said nothing.
So I left. I got home and found more of the foam in my oil fill again which hadn't been there in a few weeks. I had drove a little further then normal and my oil did appear to be a little low, being on the safe/add line. It was in the safe area on like a 1/2 at an angle. sorta like this ( / .) Anyone had problems with the v8 4.7? Any ideas? What should I do? I'm freaking out cause I see all these complaints for dodges and issues with these engines. I need help to calm my nerves. I love the truck just gotta have it running and dependable. All help is appreciated! Sorry for being long!
