I have a check engine light on and a clunk in the transmission.

My mechanic diagnosed the issue as a bad shift solenoid and pressure sensor.

I have (2) options:
1) Mechanic can replace the transmission for $3000. The fear being that the transmission may already be damaged and he doesn't make repairs.

2) My mechanic did recommend a place that does repairs (Chrysler Dealer.) For about $300 I can get the parts replaced. The Service Tech says that he believes there's most likely no damage. He also says I can drive-it the 30 miles to him without further damaging it (Should I tow or drive-it??).

What's your thoughts on this one?? I hear that this is a common issue.

How bad is the clunk?
To me, I'd tow it in, if it's shifting badly.

It shifts at a slightly higher RPM (2000) with a thud. 2nd to 3rd and higher speeds has a clunk. For $50 I'll just get it towed the 25 miles with my AAA membership.

Has anyone had this repair? I don't want to waste $350 if I need a new tranny?

Okay, my recommendation wasn't good enough.

How about the mechanic that actually looked at it? He has already told you you don't need a new transmission. He has seen it, we work off of description and ideas thousands of miles away. Do what he has said.

Or save your $350 and go spend $3000 :? :wall:

Nope.

Properly cared for, it'll last and last and last. Improperly serviced or not done at the right intervals and you buy a new one.

Mechanic said it was common. Unfortunately, I got the truck after 105k and had the service done (now at 109k.) I agree with you. I usually service trannys at twice the recommended interval and have had success.

I'll hear more on Tuesday when it gets towed to the recommended dealer.

They'll have to drop the pan on the tranny anyway. The solenoids are inside. This is a fairly common failure. Surprised your tranny man won't do it. Have the delaership do it and replace the filter anyway. It won't hurt.

I'm assuming that this is a 2000 D with a 45rfe tranny
If so don't be surprised if the dealer tells you
A. You need a new TPS
B. Its just a tranny computer issue
The tranny itself is rock solid what controls it may not be

I have the 4.7 with the 45RFE tranny. (2) motion sensors and a tranny service set me back $550? It wasn't a shift solenoid and pressure sensor. Interesting enough I had the tranny serviced a year ago. Unfortunately this time they performed the flush (verses drain) and the fluid looked poor??

I drove-it back via highway and city driving. The shifts are very smooth but acceleration seems slower. Maybe it's just me trying to baby-it? I've reset the MPG to see if there's a change.

I agree crappy job the first time it was serviced
