Hello everyone,
It's mantis. Yeah I know my name now is MantisSRT but it's still me. Stupid account doesnt' work properly I can't post.

Anyway back when I was a regular , I use to give advise and help people in here with their detailing needs. So now that I'm back, use me abuse me , I'm here to teach Detailing technics , What's new , how current methods are used. How should you care for your Durango etc.

So let it rip my friends. And OH by the way, I"m on the hunt for another Durango. This time around, I'm thinking SRT , they don't make them anymore , just the Hellcat and I think that is a bit overkill for a Durango, but probably tons of fun.

Anyway I'm also searching for a Wife Durango as well. That will be a R/T or if I can find the right on maybe a SRT for her as well, we shall see.

Who makes the best claybars? I normally use Meguiars yellow but would like something a step up as Meguiars is just OK (same with Mothers)
I don;t want heavy duty just something that works really well.

Hello Vice-White,
So actually both Claybars you are currently using are very good quality. BUT what I think is going on is your not doing a Iron Remover step first AND you may not be using the proper lube.
Just to answer your question , Good quality clay bars can be found at Adams Polishes , Griots Garage which by the way make a pretty good Synthetic Clay Sponge . DIY Detail has a good Clay towel as well as Chemical Guys make excellent Clay bars. I have used them all with great success.

So lets talk about the proper steps on how to clay a vehicle.
1- You want to do a full Foam Cannon Presoak, no water on the paint just straight Foam Cannon with a High PH Soap like a strip soap. Suggestions are Adams Polishes Strip Soap or Cleanse from Hyperclean.
Use this soap 2 oz in your foam cannon and another 2 oz in your bucket wash setup.
2- Fully Rinse the car after the Strip soap sits on the paint for about 2 to 4 minutes. A lot of the dirt and grime will run off the vehicle to the ground before you rinse which helps prevent scratching.
3- Foam the car again , once the car is fully foamed , do a normal bucket wash. You can use 1 bucket, I don't believe in the 2 bucket method but if you do , that's fine at this point the damage that can cause we are past it with my Foam Rinse Foam method.
4- Completey rinse the vehicle again.
5- Now you want to use a IRON REMOVER. You can use your favorite OR you I will suggest Fuego from Hyperclean or IRON REMOVER from Adams Polishes. Both are good Hyperclean's is better IMO. This step you will treat each panel with the iron remover covering each panel fully but don't over due it. Hard to show you exactly how much to use but you want a light coating on all panels glass , the entire exterior surfaces.
Leave this one for a few minutes then fully rinse.
6- Now is time for Clay. You will now be removing anything left over on the paint. You will use your Strip wash bucket and wash media to soap up each panel just like your washing but your now going to use any of the above clay bars including the ones you already use which are fine.
Go over each panel with the clay and checking it after a few passes to make sure you didn't pick up anything that can cause scratching. You want to bend the clay over on itself often so you're not rubbing whatever you picked up on the next panel. You can dip it in the soap often also to kinda wash it off after each panel. Again fold it over on itself often to prevent scratching
If you get into Clay towels and sponges, you will find they are a bit finer than bars , can be re used but can mar the paint easier as they can drag on the paint. You have to keep a lot of soap under them BUT they work very well and I like them just fine.
7- Once your finished each panel do another full rinse step with the pressure washer. I suggest the Green tip or the White. I like the green you can get into cracks a bit better.

Now dry the vehicle fully and I suggest using air or a leaf blower to get all the water out of all the cracks before Polishing or whatever step needs to happen to achieve the results your looking for.
With this technic , you car fully ready for a polish or if you have no scratches paint enhancement or swirls you need to remove, you are actually ready for a protection step.
You can before you apply a protection , you can use a surface prep wipe but not really necessary even if your ceramic coating after my process.

Hope this helps my friend.

Noticed yellow-gold tint on my rims. Cleaners I've tried and lots of scrubbing barely makes a dent.

I assume it's "dust" from the Powerstop carbon fiber pads.

What cuts through? View attachment 139205
Hello Ghost74,
You might be using the wrong cleaners on your wheels. On a side note before we talk about what to use, how are those Carbon Fiber Power stop brakes?

Anyway , if you want to try a much better tire and wheel cleaner system this is what I suggest.
Hyperclean Feugo and TRX. Fuego is their wheel cleaner and TRX is there rubber tire cleaner. TRX can be used as a wheel and tire cleaner on not so hammered wheels. It doesn't contain any IRON remover but that's where feugo comes in.
You can purchase Hyperclean products on their website. It's not sold in stores.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

The Powerstops seem to be the go-to pad on this site. Especially for the SRT and T&G guys with the brembos. The stock pads that come with brembos generate a ridiculous quantity of dust.

It was so bad I swapped them out within a few weeks after buying my T&G.

Thank you. I don not have a foam cannon or pressure washer and my water is hard as hell.

This is what I do so tell me my mistakes.

I use a foam gun and foam the whole Durango with dawn dish detergent when I run out of Adams stripper soap.
I do let it sit for a couple of minutes but I have to keep foaming because even in cool mornings it dries to quickly.
I then rinse the whole car clean and re-foam the roof, had wash the roof, rinse the roof. Then do the hood same way, hatch area same way and each side same way.
I use microfiber 24x48" drying towels to get it 99 percent and then my greenworks leaf blower does the rest.

I take a break :D

Then starting at the roof, I use the mothers or Meguiars clay with Meguiars final inspection as my lubricant or Griots quick detailer or Meguiars quick detailer. I do not like Mothers quick detailer.
When I am done claying the Durango, I come in with a Meguiars polish or another one that has no protecting qualities about it. .
Next, when the whole care is done is when I start at the roof and apply the protectant. Sometimes I use synth wax or sometimes consumer grade ceramic, usually 2 coats. After 24 hours I detail the car with a detailer with ceramic in it when needed.

first off , NEVER EVER use Dish Detergent ever again. It will dry out your rubbers, plastic and strip your paint as you want it to but the Chemical make up of that cleaner is not designed for sensitive car materials. Worst thing you can do to a car. So if you run out, go to a local Auto store or Wallmart and buy a substitution that is designed for automotive finishes.
Nothing wrong with a foam gun. They work pretty good just not as good as a pressure washer.

Your process isn't that bad except the Dish soap. I would also clay with Car Shampoo then quick detailers or Clay lubes. I find them to be a waste of money and your constantly spraying etc. With car shampoo, you have a bucket and wash media to keep your panels protected.

Dawn is out :D

I do treat all my rubber and soft plastics during the detail so I am sure no damage has happened but good to know and won't use it again.

Hyperclean Fuego cut right through the yellow.

Looks great.

Now how do I keep the birds from crapping all over. Parking in the same spot for 25 years and never had this problem until this spring 🙄

Cut the tree down? Maybe the same trick that pool users have done which is a fake dead crow laying in different places each day.

I think it's a couple blue jays that moved in and fly back an forth from my wifes bird feeder and the woods.

Maybe they will be met with an unfortunate accident, like lead poisoning.

I picked up some "Chemical Guys HydroSpeed Ceramic Quick Detailer" pretty much on a whim since they had it at Lowe's of all places, and then decided to put multiple coats of it on the DD, mostly cause it's fairly easy to do LOL. Here are a couple pics I took in an attempt to show how much shine I got outta it, by putting a coat on it, waiting a day or so, and then putting another on top of that.
