I have a 2001 Durango with 4.7l. Last March I brought the truck to the dealer for a squeak in the front end when going over bumps. They stated that they replaced sway bar bushings and the squeak went away. Well the squeak is back and my warranty is over. I have some questions:

Where are the sway bar bushings, does anyone have a diagram of the front end?

Do they have to be replaced or can you lubricate them and if so what type of lubrican't?

If they must be changed is it a difficult job?

Thanks
Mark

If you can find the sway bar, you should be able to find the sway bar bushings.

the sway bar runs across the front of the truck and attaches to each lower control arm (at each front wheel.) There's a rubber bushing at each end, and two in the middle (roughly under the radiator.)

I usually use silicone grease or brake grease. If you jack up one side of the truck, you can get the bushings to kind of squint and you can slather some grease inside the openings between the bushings and the bar. then jack the other side and different spaces will open up where you can slather more grease.

squeak

I assume that you're talking about an actual grease (such as wheel bearing grease in a grease gun) not a spray can oil. If the bushings were really changed as the dealer stated, should they be squeaking already?

Thanks

The replacements are made of the same material as the original. The squeak is from the sway bar moving within the bushing. It's very common for the replacements to start squeaking so soon. The outers really need a lubrication periodically. Graphited silicone brake lube works well, if you can find it. Also synthetic wheel bearing lube or chassis lube works well. I,ve gone over nine months after using chassis lube. The rubber is actually a soft synthetic compound, so I have experienced no deterioration of the rubber from the use of chassis lube.
