In Jan’ of 2023 I made the mistake of talking my wife into selling her much beloved GMC Acadia with a V6 to buy a 2022 DD Citadel with a 5.7 Hemi and tow package. My reasoning was that the 5.7 Hemi would tow our fishing boat up the grades to the lake much easier than her Acadia; the 3-4 times a year we camped at the lake and I towed the trailer with my truck while she followed behind in her car towing the boat. Plus the DD was Octane Red which she absolutely loved. Now I’ll be the first to admit when it comes to modern technology my wife is stuck in the 90s. However, she never had an issue using bluetooth to connect her phone’s music to the Acadia’s radio or to my Chevy truck and other home systems. However, she has had nothing but problems with connecting her phone to the U-connect system in the DD. Either it won’t connect at all or won't connect for several minutes, and or just randoming comes on minutes later or sometimes it will disconnect her phone/music on its own while she's driving. I’ll admit that while I haven’t had as many issuess connecting my phone, there have been times I’ve also had trouble getting my phone to connect. Even when I have been connected for 30 minutes or more and turn the ignition off momentarily, turn it back on within 15 seconds and my phone won’t reconnect again for several minutes, if at all, when it was just connected! Even more frustrating for me is, even though when I get in the DD the U-connect welcomes me and says it’s loading “My profile,” if my wife is with me and has her phone with her, the U-connect automatically defaults to her phone and it’s almost impossible to get it to connect to mine, if at all. Neither her Acadia nor my Chevy truck did/do this! When we took the DD in for its first “free” oil change we complained about these issues with the radio and the tech said the U-connect system had the latest updates and he couldn’t recreate the issue(s) with his personal phone. I’ve read on this forum and others sites that it’s pretty much a majority opinion that the U-connect system sucks! Fast forward to yesterday and my wife came home from shopping and I came out to help her unload. When she got out of the DD she was madder than I’ve ever seen her in recent memory. She got out, slammed the door and said, “I’ve had it with this stupid car, now the radio wont’ shut off!” Sure enough, the ignition was off, the door closed and the radio continued to play for a minute or so before shutting off. She said it did the same thing when she got to the store and she was afraid to leave the car with the radio on fearing she’d come out and have a dead battery. (I explained to her that the lights and radio would shut off automatically after approx 10 minutes) Last week she went to the drive through pharmacy and turned the car off while she waited. When finished she turned the engine back on and put the car in drive and the car wouldn’t move. (yes the parking brake was off) She turned the car on and off several times and it still wouldn’t move no matter what gear she put it in. Finally, a male pharmacist came to the window and tried to talk her through it. She did everything he said and nothing. The woman in the car behind her even came up and offered to help. Needless to say my wife was embarrassed and humiliated. After several rounds of turning the engine on and off the car finally moved when she put in gear and she drove off. I briefly considered operator error, however, how could she possibly screw up starting the engine and putting the car in gear?! She has never had this issue with any cars we’ve owned over numerous years. Naturally, it hasn’t done it since. The issue that drives me nuts are the squeaks and rattles in the car. When we took it in for the first (free) oil change we complained about a rattle on the left side of the dash by the AC vent. The tech couldn’t duplicate it and attributed it to temp changes and plastic pieces expanding and contracting (it was winter). Now not only do we still have the same rattle, the speaker in the driver’s door panel makes a horrendous vibration/screeching sound when certain songs hit a certain note. My wife took a friend to lunch last week and when the speaker did it, it startled her friend and she asked my wife, “what was that?!” Additionally, there’s another rattle either in the door pillar between the front and rear driver’s door or inside the rear driver’s door panel. (Yes, I've checked the seat belt adjuster/tensioner in the door pillar and its not that) I absolutely hate rattles in my cars and have been known to tear a car apart trying to find/fix them. But this is virtually a new/modern car and I shouldn’t have to tear it apart to find a stupid rattle(s)! Also, I know we’ll get the same old “couldn’t duplicate” from the tech when we take it in for its second oil change. Also, when the AC is on there is a strange noise coming from behind the dash. It's almost like AC parts are wheezng. It's really hard to describe but my best guess is that it sounds like some actuators are opening and closing. We also complained about this during the first oil change and naturally since it was winter the tech couldn't duplicate. However, he did top off the freon level as he said it was low; as he added was a common issue with new cars coming from the factory. Again, since it was winter we assumed the issued was fixed and didn't hear the wheezing again unitl recently when we started usiing the AC again. My wife has had it with the DD and wants to trade it in on another car, even at a large financial hit to us. I have to admit I’m also heavily leaning that way even though it isn’t my daily driver, as the rattles drive me up a wall when I do drive it. My 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda doesn’t rattle as much as this DD and it’s 54 years old!!

So should we cut our losses and trade it in on Ford Explorer with the turbo V-6 or take our chances that the build quality and Uconnect system on a 2024 DD would be any better?

Something is wrong

Um, no. But whatever.

Anyway, was this new or pre-owned?
Too, also, sounds like you have a lousy dealer (which IS a common problem)

Ah, there is a reason many owners on here have nicknamed it FU-connect.

Usraptor, there are many owners I've seen post about the phone disconnecting and reconnecting issues. I've experienced it myself many times as I travel a lot. It happens most often for me when I'm very near a cell tower and I suspect it's because the system and/or phone can't handle the interference. This U-Connect 5 is notorious for owners (including myself) having U-Connect box requires service errors. I get those, so I really don't know if my phone disconnection errors are tower interference or a U-Connect module and/or connector issue. Personally, I suspect the later as I did't have any of these issues in my old Durango nor have this issue with my other vehicle or rentals, only this DD and it's U-Connect 5. And what's worse with that is that none of the service departments know how to diagnose it/fix it. I've had mine in and they just say they can't find anything. I don't know if the system just sucks at logging errors correctly, if they don't have the correct equipment to diagnose, or if there's just no guidance to diagnose. Mine just started to do it again after the most recent U-Connect patch/update. There's some (like me) who have had to have their radio/U-Connect replaced. I had the same issues you described of the radio just staying on a couple of times (it would eventually shut off) and completely separate one day I got in and there was just no audio except for the parking sensor beeps (which do use the speakers) and they had to replace the radio unit. (Not entirely sure if it's actually a radio unit, the system is SO integrated into the vehicle I'm not sure what the "radio" is called)

For the phone disconnect/reconnect issue, one method to address it is to unpair the bluetooth and use a cabled connection for the carplay/android auto connection. I know MANY find this unsatisfactory to have to do this to make it work, as it's counter to the whole point of having wireless. For the phone pairing priority (your's vs her's), I'm pretty sure you can set phone priorities in the system for the different profiles, you'll have to look in the U-Connect manual.

I've had the low freon on my 2022, while still under warranty they had to replace lines to the rear that had a pinhole leak, which is a manufacturing defect. It's a noticeable noise when there's low freon which is likely the "wheezing" sound you describe.

I won't say what you should or shouldn't do going forward, that's all a personal choice and I have no experience with the Ford Explorer to make any recommendation with it.

+1 yes wheezing is likely low freon.. went through that with my '14.
And the stupid dealer kept saying "nothing is wrong"

The system comes charged with UV dye from the factory, so I ended up getting out there one night with my UV flashlight and taking a picture of leak which was RIGHT UP TOP UP FRONT.
And so they ordered the part, fixed the AC, and knocked the front radar off one mounting stud in the process. ACC/FCW out to lunch.
Another four visits (each time I pointed out "you probably knocked the radar off-kilter when you were in there") with the usual "can't duplicate the problem" "can't fix it if there are no codes" "well, it looks like you need a new radar and that's an expensive part".. to which I pointed out that I have a Mopar warranty so it's $100 - knock yourself out. ... and they clearly didn't think that part would get approved... so they took the front fascia off and sure enough the radar was hanging in space.

All this is to say that dealer service departments are generally sucky.
But the gang here is pretty good at helping resolve things.

Unfortunately the current version of Uconnect has been a problem for many.

I have 20+ years of software design experience and tried to get a job developing Uconnect but was turned down when I applied. Ironically in the same week Kia America in Irvine wanted to hire me but unfortunately I'd already taken a different role.

I have a 2014 durango with the older version of uconnect that I believe was designed in America. However for the new version the types of issues described by users seem like the result of offshoring development. When teams get distributed projects get done at different rates and quality. The hard part is if you don't start out with a clearly defined expectation of quality it's nearly impossible to get things up to a higher standard at a later date. This is probably what's happened with the new version of Uconnect.

Regarding your wife and getting frustrated with tech. Unfortunately tech is here to stay. Avoiding it will just cause frustration.

Sounds like you need to pay the kid down the street for IT support on the Dodge.

Unlike many on here, I never have a need to connect my phone to anything. I don't require any more automation in my life than what is required, not desired. I still read the newspaper and have a real telephone in my home. Some things just never need to be improved on no matter what industry thinks.

No rattles in my 2014...and agree, that would drive me batty.
I'd just connect via cable and see if things improve. Does sound like you got a potential Monday/Friday build or a bunch of newies put your D together.
Only you can decide on the financial hit. I'd think you'd get a better deal trading in on a new D...but maybe not?
I'd consider Kia Telluride/Hyundai Palisade twins and Toyota Grand Highlander.

I hope no one calls you while you're driving

I should requalify what I typed before. We have paired our phones for hands-free usage, but that is all. So I guess I'm really a hybrid.

Acura MDX Type S would be my choice to compare to the 5.7 Durango. The MDX is not a towing vehicle but the Type S is a bad ass performance vehicle :D

As a Ford guy (I've owned 11 Fords since 1977), I will pass along how I ended up with a Durango instead of an Explorer.

In 2022, I was all set to buy a new Explorer ST. Why the ST model? That was the least expensive way to get the V-6 Ecoboost instead of the 4 cylinder Ecoboost that comes in lesser Explorers.

But, I don't buy cars very quickly. I spend a lot of time researching, reading forum comments, reading Facebook posts, watching YouTube videos, etc., before I make a buying decision. What I started hearing about the current generation of Explorers concerned me.

When the 6th gen was first released in 2020, Ford shipped the entire production from the Chicago Assembly plant to a fenced-in parking lot in the Detroit area. Why? To fix problems. Either the parts were wrong or the assembly was wrong, but Ford had to "fix" lots of Explorers before they could sell them.

Then, there was the "stop sale" order due to the rear suspension bolts. Seems that the engineers designed the rear differential housing to be held in the subframe with two bolts running horizontally into the housing. The bean counters decided to eliminate one of the bolts. When they started getting reports that the remaining bolt was breaking on some Explorers, Ford issued a "stop sale" and a recall. The police interceptor versions still get two bolts, but the civilian Explorers only have one.

Then, there was another "stop sale" order due to the rear-view cameras. These cameras are now required by DOT rule and if they fail, that's a safety item that NHTSA gets involved with. During 2023, lots of Explorers were sitting on dealers lots that couldn't be sold because they had defective cameras.

Through all of this, Ford has had untold problems with suppliers and build quality.

You know who has the second worst working relationship with their suppliers? Ford.

You know who has the worst working relationship with their suppliers? Stellantis.

Anyway, in December 2022, I started looking at Durangos instead of Explorers. In August 2023, I bought a Durango R/T TnG. It's been great so far.

Seems to be out of the brands that drastically increased their points rating with suppliers is concerned about quality of their vehicles.

That would be the 1st under performing Japanese car I have seen if MT is correct.
The competition MT put against the Acura is a joke. BMW X7,X5, come on now Motor Trend let's not be stupid.
Certainly X5...same starting price so would/could be crossed shopped. X7 a bit larger class vehicle.
But its 6.2 sec 0-60 not quick these days..need to be closer to 5 flat.

I think it is more like that vid the other day that was posted showing the SRT Durango being handed it's ass by a Ford Explorer ST on rolling starts. But from the dig the 392 made the ST look pathetic. I have already checked and a few mods exist for the Acura such as replacing charge pipes and adding a CAI seems to produce grood results. But for me, I like to buy out to the box HP and do not mod my vehicles anymore (performance wise)

To this day I kick myself for selling my SRT10. Nothing like 525lbs of torque with 4.56:1 rear axle ratio and a factory custom Tremec 6 speed. With tunes, people were getting an additional 50-75HP and for the ones who added a SC, WHOA!!!!!!!!

Ok back to the real world. 😁
