Well, it's all over for one '99 SLT 5.9L PT4WD.

I was making my normal drive into work this morning. Came to an intersection just a few blocks from my office as the light turned green. I slowed anyway, because there's a bit of a bump at this intersection. Little did I know, I was about to feel a much bigger bump.

As I was about 25ft from the intersection, something on the right catches my eye. Not uncommon as this is a college campus area. There's usually a cute chick or three walking to class here. Unfortunately, this wasn't what I saw. What I saw was a forest green Ford E350 with SCHOOL STUDENTS decals (luckily it was just the driver and no kids in the van) traveling at a slightly higher rate of speed than I. She had a red light. She wasn't stopping. I hit the brakes, hoping to stop short or at least only clip her. No such luck. I struck the van at a 90 degree angle squarely on the LF tire, sending it spinning in the direction I was headed. She came to a rest about 30ft past the intersection where there was thankfully no traffic. My Durango and I continued on into the corner of an abandoned building that's scheduled for demolition to expand the college dormitories. I helped them get an early start on the demolition by slamming my truck into it.

I did a quick head-to-toe check of myself and had no bleeding or immediately noticeable bones sticking through the skin or anything. I then opened the door and stepped out of the truck. Felt a slight pain in my left shin and noticed my right arm was swelling a bit. Did another quick assessment and found both knees were a little skinned from being mashed into the underside of my dash and a good-sized lump just below the abrasion on my shin. The police and ambulance showed up and checked me over and asked if I wanted to go to the hospital. I told the cop "She ran the red light; I had the right of way and she didn't yield." to which he responded "We'll get the details later. Get yourself checked out." I stepped into the ambulance and took the ride to Wilkes Barre General Hospital. 2 hours, several x-rays and some pain meds later, I was released. Got a ride home from my Aunt and then finally my dad came down to help me get my personal effects from the Durango and pick up my insurance-paid rental.

So now here I sit with a sore leg and arm, trying to figure out what my next vehicle will be. I was really hoping to hang on to the Durango for a couple more years until I paid off some loans and could afford a car payment. Guess I'm going to have to scrape things together for a while.

Even if it's repairable, I don't want it back. I went through that once before with a fairly serious accident and the truck (bronco) was never right after that.

Wow that was a hard hit.
I hope there were witnesses regarding her running the red light.
Unfortuantely you D is destroyed. Fortunately there are many out there that are available at great prices and her insurance should be paying you for it.
Glad you're Ok?all D's are replaceable all members however aren't.
Take Care of your wounds and keep accurate notes of everything. She (the Bus Co) should be paying dearly

I'm with you there. Looking forward to getting mine paid off. Did you keep full coverage? Like Dango said her ins should be held responsible but still don't they only pay the value of the truck and any medical expenses, etc? And that's only if you still had comprehensive on the vehicle. Otherwise it'd be a total loss. For the value of your truck you should be able to get into an older model rice burner and save even more on fuel costs (and ins).

Luckily I haven't been in many accidents so am not sure how the ins works. Hope you get to feeling better and it all works out for you.

Sorry about the accident. You're okay and that's the important part. Let the insurance companies battle it out.

Dude, hard hit! And you walked away!
Sorry about your loss, but the D did ut's job! It can be replaced, Luckily the values of our vehicles are down, so you may find a decent replacement. I'm agreeing with it being a total. Too much front end damage, let alone possible frame damage!

1) Sooooo glad you're okay

2) Your Durango did it's job, Ford? Building? inertia be damned.

3) Take your money and get another D. I'd suggest a 2003 (the best of the Gen1s) and right now you can find one on the cheap getting a great deal

4) Buy the D back from the insurance company for pennies. Probably less than $500. Help the D community by stripping and selling the parts from the firewall back (and a few under the hood I'm sure.) You can make some $, know that your D is helping other Ds live on and that your D will be in all parts around the world. It'd be a profitable, fun and very worthy cause to the D community.

Thanks for the comments and well-wishes, guys.

I'm doing OK, back to work today. Back, ankles, knees and shins are pretty sore, but I'm managing (thanks to the ibuprofen and flexeril.) The swelling on my leg has gone down considerably and only hurts if I squat down.

I don't know if I'll be back in a Durango, though. I was kinda waiting out paying off my school loans and some other debts to get a different vehicle and have had my eyes on a loaded Audi A6 2.7T for a while now. At this point I'm just waiting to hear back from the insurance adjuster to find out what they're offering for the totaled D so I can make my decision on what I can afford. I originally bought the Durango to tow my 24' car hauler 5 years ago (hence the 5.9L) and have since sold that and the car that I hauled in it. I really no longer had a use for the Durango's power and towing capability, but couldn't afford to get rid of it at the time. Once I paid it off and my only expense was fuel and insurance, it wasn't that big of a deal. I was quite happy not having a car payment, so now that I'll have one, I'm just hoping it's not going to break the bank. My property/school taxes are going up almost a grand for next year, but I should still be fine.

As far as buying the D back and parting it out, I don't know that I'll have the time to do it. I don't really have anywhere to store it while I do that, either. Probably the only thing salvageable under the hood is the K&N filter and maybe some of the fuses. The pictures really don't do it justice. Pretty sure the motor and tranny are shot as well. For what it'd cost to have it towed to my house and back to the yard when I'm done and what little is usable, I don't know that I'd recoup my costs.

Figures, I just had a rusty muffler clamp break off last weekend and just bought a replacement for it but didn't have a chance to put it on after the truck cooled down from the trip. Wonder if Advance will take that back?

Good Luck with whatever you chose to do

SO the adjuster called me and offered $4733.65 for the D. I told her to have another look and let me know when she has a real offer. I've done some searching and found values from all resources in the neighborhood of $6000 and 67 comparable vehicles for sale at an average of $6287. When she calls me back on Monday, I have printouts of all the information I've collected and I'm ready to fax it to her at a moment's notice.

Anybody else think that's a very low offer for an excellent condition '99 PT4WD with 157k on it?

While we think its not a lot
Its unfortunate that D's aren't real valuable right now.
Definitely worth a fight though

Tiny, glad you're OK!! I know Steve has brought it up many times, but a few bumps and bruises in a D might instead be a life altering injury in a little car. Gotta love a tough old chunk of steel.

How many miles do you drive? If you want to keep the payment down, I agree buy another D, you could get one for a song right now in great shape with reasonable miles. That Audi is a great car but I've had some friends own Audi's and the cost of ownership is high, repairs are specialized, so keep that in mind when you figure what it'll cost you.

Good luck!

Can't hurt to ask for 5500. Negotiate, it works in some places!

Just a quick update?

Can't really find a nice D around here, but found a nice 2005 Trailblazer EXT (definitely wasn't my first choice, but in excellent shape at $7k below blue book, I couldn't pass it up.) Only missing 3 options offered in 05: leather, onstar and Bose stereo. Has everything else. I'm happy with it so far and have a few friends with Tb's with no issues. If gas prices go back down, I might even be able to sell it for a profit!

The 2004 Audi A6 ended up in 3rd on the list behind a 2001 TT Roadster Convertible (could have had it for a song, but didn't think it was practical) and the Trailblazer (practical and cheap.) The insurance wasn't bad, but I was going to be spread pretty thin as far as finances go, so I went with the best option.

The insurance company (Nationwide) is fighting tooth and nail. I need to call and remind them that I have $1500 in coverage for aftermarket parts and that should be added in to cover accessories that I can't remove from the vehicle or that were damaged in the accident. Guess I need to start digging for the receipt for that $720 alarm system, the replacement speakers I put in and all the broken brackets I'll have to replace for other things. It really is quite the pain in the arse.

I'm also going to have to see the doctor again as I still have a large lump on my leg that starts to hurt if I'm on my feet for more than 10 minutes. It's really making it impossible to do the things I normally did, like going to the gym (I've lost 70lbs since January and I'm starting to gain some back because I can't get the cardio I need anymore  ) and riding my motorcycle. The position my leg is in on the bike puts some pressure on that particular area and causes it to throb. I'm starting to think I'm going to need to get a lawyer and go after this bus company or the driver herself for punitive damages. I'm able to work since I have a desk job, so I'm not losing wages, but my fitness and health are suffering because of this accident. Something needs to be done.

eBay doesn't work in your area?

IndyD
LOTS OF D's on eBay even a couple RT's

Glad you're ok, nice crumple zone!
I think I'd cry (or laugh) if someone offered me $4700 for my D.
$4733.65? ever wonder how they come up with a crazy number like that?
I mean, not $4750? $4733.65
Sounds like you've done good getting some ammo for negotiating. They're 1st offer is always a definite low-ball number.
