We LOVE Durangos and are looking to buy a late model used with Class IV trailering package for <$40k. I'm very surprised that such a low percentage of Durangos have this package. We live in Central Virginia but are willing to drive as needed (~8 hours or so) to access an affordable market (and/or one with more inventory). Any suggestions?? TIA

Carvana, Carmax or other online search sites. The towing package isn't that hard to find unless you're talking about a '21 and later. If a vehicle listing doesn't show it then look at the photos and if there is a bump out on the rear bumper then it has the tow package.

Depending on what options you want you might want to stick to '21s. Those are more likely to have the DVD system, for example as it was discontinued after '21. '21 was also the Covid year where most of the tech package was unavailable at various times. '21s also got the first FU Connect UC5 radio that often worked like crap. Unfortunately the later years were a crap shoot for good radios. After '21 is when Dodge decided to package options into non-negotiable packages. It's a real shit show with Dodge since 2020.

Oh! Thank you for the heads up!! I have a quote in hand for New 2024 Dodge Durango GT w/ Trailer Tow Group IV for sale in Culpeper, VA 22701: Sport Utility Details - 713192634 | Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) that squeaks in just at budget. Any insight as to whether the issues have straightened out now or best to try to locate a good pre-owned 2020?

I think the only way you are going to find that year in that price is going to have an insane amount of mileage or damaged.
Interesting...is this because of limited supply during those years? (Asking since I have a quote in hand for new 2024 that comes in right at budget--trying to get my lay of the land!) Thanks!

The newer models have had fewer issues with the radios and the newer V6's may not end up with lifter and camshaft issues as the older ones did, but that remains to be seen. As to the other options you may want, the GT is equipped different than the RTs are which is what I pay attention to. You'll have to check the window sticker to know how it's equipped and then compare that to the '24 brochure to see what you might want that this doesn't have. If you're going to do serious towing though, get an RT. If it's really serious towing then the RT is not going to be the best for that. Read up on it in the brochure.

I am curious specifically what you are looking at (motor, gears, trim, etc). Most of the ones in my area are closer to $50k for hemi with tow package.

Big price difference is going to be whether you want the Hemi or Pentastar engine. Both are good and reliable, but just depends on how much you want to tow and how much you value the extra power from the V-8. As others have pointed it, it is super easy to tell which have the tow package and which don't.

If the bumper is flat between the tailpipes, no tow package:

If there is a bulging cover between the tailpipes that hides the factory hitch, it has the tow package:

Personally, I would avoid anything assembled during the COVID years....seems like every OEM took a hit on quality with lots of weird issues during that time.

I'd rather go new than get a 2020 at the crazy prices for used cars. Plus the new 2021+ headlights looks great!

Yep...that's the difference. Although I'm sure the HEMIs are to die for, we're sufficing with a V6 to stay within budget. Really just need to be able to pull kayaks and tooling/equipment.

I drove a 2017 V6 Citadel for a short time and was impressed with the power of even the V6!

IndigoEyes:
Your '24 to be is pretty close to the '20 SXT Plus I picked up in February '23. One of the reasons I picked it was the DG color, and what I felt was a good price for a 3 year old '20 with 31kish miles.

During my search, I wanted to stay with '18 or newer because I do not care for the shift knob in the '14-17 models. Also, I did not like the dash/interior update they did for '21.

The V6/8 speed trans combo works really well. I would have liked a V8, but not for the difference they wanted in price.

Let's be real. The whole Stellantis family has been a package-bundle shit show for a looong time, it just gets seriously amplified once they decide to sunset a model.

FYI if you are looking for a V6 there is not much difference between a factory tow package and one in which a hitch is added.

Hitch with bumped and color match hitch cover
HD cooling (allows for max tow capacity where as standard cooling is limited to something like 3600lbs)
Load leveling shocks
Full size metal spare
7 & 4 trailer harness

My AWD GT (dual exhaust with slight bump in power along with paddle shifters) did not come with a hitch but I was able to install one for under $400. But if you can find a decently priced used SXT (if you plan to tow I would opt for AWD) with factory tow package it is a much better option.

I'm not sure the visual check is sufficient to determine if the D has the tow package or not. My '19 R/T has the door in the rear fascia, but no tow package.

If the OP isn't towing anything heavy, its quite easy to add a hitch and 4 pin light package to a D without the tow package. I added a receiver and 4 pin wiring on my so I can use hitch accessories and tow my 3 rail motorcycle trailer. I went with the model the uses the factory door as the one that hangs done below the rear fascia is horrendous looking. Everything was purchased at etrailer.

My 2017 GT had the door as well but it did not have the bump.

All Durango's have the door. The door without the bump will not clear the factory hitch. If the car has the no-bump door, it does not have the factory tow package. If it has the bump, it MIGHT have the factory tow package. The covers interchange, so a missing smooth-door could have been replaced at some point with a bumped-door.
