I wanted to see if anyone had any advice. I’m lol g at purchasing a 2006 dodge Durango sxt 4.7 L with 178,000 on it. Yes I know it’s used but I was wondering if anyone has one and if issues, is it worth even looking into to buy, etc. I’ve never owned one and my expedition is full of problems and the Durango is the only size vehicle I can find in my price range and need something soon as I have 3 kids and can’t be without a vehicle( my problem I know). Thanks in advance for any advice!

Honestly, if you just have 3 kids to haul, minivans or a sedan are a better choice. The Durango is essentially built on the base of a truck, so everything is more expensive for maintenance. The Durango is generally a good vehicle, but there are a few issues that are a bit like gambling. There was a known issue with the transfer case speed selector that has a small chance of shifting into low gear while moving, which can grenade the transmission and the 4.7 as well as 5.7 have the potential for dropping a valve or lifter slap.

I bought my 2005 about 5 years ago with 135k miles and I have since replaced the shift motor, valve covers, cat converters, fuel pump, alternator, the exhaust rusted out twice, and every single component of the suspension system except for the lower control arms. Meanwhile, my 2002 Lesabre has only needed an alternator, ignition module controller, and a radiator. I will say that I put my 5.7 Durango through hell and its still reliable, but as you can see from my repair list, I have spent easily $2000 on repairs and I did most of the work myself.

Thank you so much for the advice! I really can’t find many mini vans around me that are decent for the asking price but I will keep looking! I have a list a mile long for my 06 expedition, hence why another vehicle, I just really like SUV’s/trucks!Thank you again.

Hi Kaitlin:
The Gen 2 Durango is a nice vehicle, but I'd encourage you to look for one with lower miles, and as new as possible.
I don't know what your budget is, but all of them have their quirks.
Good luck with your search.

Don
