I'm planning on swapping out the standard 20" x 8.0" Fine Silver wheels with steel wheels on a 2022 Durango GT Plus I'm about to buy. I've heard it makes handling, acceleration, and gas efficiency worse (nothing crazy from what I've heard) but otherwise is a lot cheaper alternative. Does anyone have experience with steel wheels on the GT Plus?

Why? What's wrong with your wheels?

The challenger guys would typically swap in steel wheels during the winter to save their alloy wheels, is that your goal? Only experience I have with steel wheels on my GT is I have used the full size spare, which is a steel wheel but 18". My plan was to source 3 more and put winter tires on them for the winter but around here junkyards think they are made of gold.

Typically the only thing to watch out for is the offset and brake caliper clearance. The Pursuit model uses the 18x8 steel wheels (part number 6ZW73DX8AB) and the full size spare wheel (18x8, part number 4755212AC) fits as well. I don't know if that's the wheel that the pursuit model uses or not. As far as handling, there are lots of tests that show that larger diameter wheels do not help track/performance and negatively impact comfort.

Edited to add the Pursuit part number (changed the italicized sentence above). Also, here's a post from a member who switched to the Pursuit steel wheels on an R/T and lists the associated parts, including the center cap: https://www.dodgedurango.net/thread...threads/2021-durango-pursuit-18-steel-police-rims-and-chrome-center-caps.79826/

I am still running the police steelies on my 2018 R/T during the winter. I am also running dedicated winter tires. My fuel economy does suffer during the winter, but I don't know how much of that is increased rolling resistance, weight of the wheels, and occasional idling during warm-up.

That said, I have no regrets with the police steel wheels. Note that the 18" steel wheels will not clear Brembo brakes without wheel spacers.

Your initial post from 2021 was very helpful with the links! Does that mean I would have to purchase wheel spacers for my '22 Rango GT plus too?

I wonder, and maybe @Urbish or @Duh-rango can testify to this too, is there a wheel that looks similar to those on a cop car but isn't Fine Silver in color?

They will easily fit on anything without Brembos, like a lowly GT.

Re-reading this, I'm not sure what you are asking but I will give it another shot. If you want black steel police wheels, you have the p/n for those now. You can also use the non-police black 18" wheel that is used for the full-size spare (no center cap available for these). Or you can get factory or aftermarket black aluminum wheels, but nobody makes an aluminum wheel that looks like the police ones in either 18 or 20".

The Rockstar ones are kind of similar looking:

Thanks! My only concern is slower acceleration and worse handling- I have to get to crime scenes quick. Since you've driven the '18 with steelies for a while now, what have you noticed?
Acceleration is not at all affected. The handling is only affected by the 1" taller sidewall. I drive my R/T in a 'spirited' manner and even with the 18" wheels, it handles just fine for me.

If it completely sucked, they wouldn't outfit police vehicles this way.
Good point lmao. At this point I guess it's just finding where they sell the steel wheels for the cheapest. Mopar sells for $214 each right now, which isn't terrible. Last thing- I figure I should hang onto the standard Fine-Silver wheels if I try to sell my Rango say 3-4 years down the road? Steelies probably aren't that popular and would lower the value...

I would, but the tires won't be good after 5 years per the date codes on them.
