Hi,

Chrysler / dodge fan here, 2 300's, older Cummins truck and now looking at adding a Durango.

I'm ready to sign for a new '23 5.7 R/T 2 wheel drive. I remember back in 'the day', Durangos used to be plagued with transmission issues. Is that still a weak area? if they use the same trans as the Hemi 300s, I'm confident there won't be any issues...

Any chance you could also tell me good thing to upgrade right off the bat? Every manufacturer / model has weak spots, I'd like to get to work on them.

Thanks :)

No, the ZF transmissions are rock solid. Drive it in Sport Mode and you'll find that there are no weak spots. They got about everything they could from the Hemi with the way it's programmed. There are always tweaks here and there to do - CAI, cat-back exhaust, etc.

Transmissions are rock solid, nothing to worry about.

If you opt for the Tow and Go package, then everything will be upgraded to the SRT components right from the factory.

Wow that's good info! I'm not sure if this one has that package, I wouldn't bet on it as it's one the dealer ordered for their lot.
It would have red Brembo calipers which say “SRT” on them if it did.

It would also be on the window sticker as a $5990 option.

Here’s an example of a R/T Premium with the Tow and Go package in Central Texas. Marked down pretty steep too.

It’s essentially a SRT 392 vehicle but with the 5.7L hemi instead of the 392 Hemi. But it has all the other SRT components (suspension, brakes, transmission, rear differential, fender flares, track, sport, tow, snow drive modes, performance exhaust, etc …)

Here’s what the window sticker will show on the tow and go package:

Tow N Go Package $5,990
Delete Spare Tire
Red Brembo® Brakes with SRT® Performance Pads
Quadra–Trac® Active On–Demand 4WD
Electronic Limited–Slip Differential Rear Axle
Sport / Track / Tow / SnowDrive Modes
145–MPH Maximum Speed Calibration
Automatic Headlamp Leveling System
Active Noise–Control System
High Performance Exhaust
Performance–Tuned Steering
High–Performance Suspension
Adaptive Damping Suspension
Run Flat Tires
Pirelli Verde Zero 295/45ZR20 BSW All–Season Tires

If you’re already planning to upgrade a standard R/T, it’s definitely worth considering the tow and go. For $5990, you get a lot of bang for the buck.

The current transmissions are made under license from ZF Friedrichshafen AG, also known as ZF Group. They're (agreeing with TimFoilHat's assessment), "rock solid". So much so, that many other car makers, including Rolls Royce, are using them too. However, I wouldn't go by Stelantis' song of it being a "lifetime" fluid, and I'm opting to go by BMW's recommendations of fluid/filter service at around 80K miles instead... But that's just me.
EDIT: BTW, welcome to the forum. (y)

Here's more on the manufacturer;
