I have a 2016 dodge Durango SRT and it has been driving great and then all the sudden it gets stuck in first gear and manual transmission will not release back to automatic transmission check engine light comes on throws out a code P1 D 93 I have 158,000 miles on it don’t know what to do I’m a female and get screwed over a lot when it comes to repairs

Hi Ruthann:
Welcome to DDN. Did you buy your Durango new? If not, how long have you owned it? I'm going to assume that you have a Durango R/T, because the SRT model did not come out until 2018. Is yours all wheel drive, or rear wheel?

Have you had the transmission serviced at any point? The trans maker ZF recommends a fluid/filter change around 75K. Dodge tells everyone they are not to be serviced unless there is an issue.:rolleyes:

I second the recommendation to change the transmission fluid. I initially was following the Dodge advice that it's a 'lifetime' fluid but ZF recommends to change it. I changed mine just before 100,000 miles and it's one of those things that you don't notice how poorly it was operating before in comparison to how smoothly it does after the change. It's cliche to say but it runs like new. ZF Lifeguard 8 is their own fluid made specifically for the 8-speeds. It could be $30/liter or more, and the pan with new filter and gasket will be maybe $100. Some of the aftermarket pans have a drainplug to allow easy drain and fills, unlike the factory pan which will require its dozen or more bolts to be removed.

If I may ask, who this transmission guy? is it a local shop, or a chain like AAMCO or DANCO? Sadly, transmissions are a component that are ripe for people to be taken advantage of. The problem is, very few of us are trans experts, so we rely on what the "trans pro" tells us.
Once they have your trans out, and in pieces, they have you. At that point, you are into them for the R and R labor as well as the tear down, with no way to prove or disprove what you are being told.

The comment re a rebuilt not being a good choice is 100%BS. As long as the rebuilder knows what he/she is doing, a rebuilt trans can be as good as if not better than a brand new oem unit from the factory.

Case in point:
Years back when we needed a new trans for our '95 Caprice patrol car, the dealer quoted us one price for a new trans with a 3 year 36k mile warranty, and a better price on a Delphi rebuilt trans that had a 3 year 50k mile warranty.

Not every trans shop knows how to work with the Dodge 8 speeds, and some of them (dealers as well) won't touch them. They only want to pull the "bad" one, and slap in a new or rebuilt one.

Good morning Ruthann.
You are welcome. What was the outcome of your rebuild? Did the shop get you back on the road?
