Help! Anyone have issues with chronic oil leaks?

2014 sxt 3.6L

So my Durango is leaking oil again. It was about 6 months ago due to the effing dealership not putting the oil filter back on right, it was tilted at a slight angle, and the oil plug was not tightened down. So I lost a lot of oil over a short amount of time.

anyways, I am loosing oil again at an alarming rate. Ive had fresh oil spot on my driveway for about 2 weeks now, and when I checked the typical places, it was all good. Plug nice and tight. Filter nice and snug, correctly too i might add. So I am at a loss.

i checked the oil about a week and a half ago, and I was in the safe range. I checked the oil this morning, and my dipstick was bone dry. Filled it back up to safe of course, but now im at a loss as to where the leak is! Oh and also, I moved my truck out of the normal parking spot and checked the spot underneath it, it had some nice golden oil under there, which tells me that the fresh oil that hasnt made it through the engine yet had already started leaking out.

does anyone else have issues with this? I am not looking forward to it being something really bad, kind of hoping its just a valve cover gasket, buuuuuuuttttt everything looks nice and dry around there.

Where are you finding the oil - as in, under what part of the engine bay? There is a cooler - transmission & oil, I think - on the driver's side of the radiator, and I had that replaced a couple of times (~130K and ~175K) because the lines were leaking. I didn't see that much oil coming out of it though, maybe a dime-sized spot on the ground.

the leak is actually back around the transmission pan, like right there. It’s not the trans thats leaking, stuff isnt red. But, upon further research, it looks like this exact spot and leak is common for the 14’s and is due to a possibly cracked oil filter adapter housing. I’m hoping its that, because I think its got a recall that I might be able to use to get it taken care of. I’m just trying to find if there really is one or not.

If it's fresh oil then a pan gasket, oil filter housing or rear main seal.

If the filter was too tight, they likley cracked the housing when they put it back on. Has your oil filter housing been replaced yet? There was a pretty good number of them that broke for one reason or another in the '14-'15 range. Dodge came out with a new(er) design for the housing if I recall correctly?

I had my rear main seal replaced about 2 years ago. Under warr.

Thank goodness you were still under warranty. That is a bunch -O- labor for a $20 part.

Hi Don, it most likely is the housing, theres oil buildup underneath the filter, so yeah most likely. It was replaced already in January, after I realized that the dealership effed up a simple oil change. They stripped the oil filter threads, and put it on at an angle, and then didnt tighten the plug all the way so it was loose too.

Took it to a shop and got everything fixed that I didn’t know about, the housing being one of them. It was replaced with an oem housing, which are still made out of plastic. They changed the location of a couple parts of the housing, but it’s all still plastic, so it still breaks. Hoping that I can talk the shop that is going to replace it for free Since its under warranty with them still if they can get an aftermarket all metal one instead of oem, so that way I dont come in in another 6 months with the same issue and have them fix it for free all over again.

Ok on the fouled up dealer oil service. I would have been right back to them. If their techs did the oil service, then they own the damage and should make it right. I believe the aluminum housing you mention is made by Dorman. I'm not sure on the reliability of it vs the oem unit. Dorman products usually have a lifetime warranty, which is a plus.
Hopefully they can get you back in order without any more drama.

Hello Ariel, I appreciate you reaching out and trying to help solve the issue, but I am 100% positive that the dealership is the exclusive reason that I am in this situation right now. I’d be happy to list out ALL of the issues I am having to deal with because of them, but I don’t want to repeat myself on here too much, or add any extra.

I’m confident that between myself and my father who has built and rebuilt and restored cars since high school that we have figured out the problem.
