Hi everybody!

When I was underneath my D the other day, I noticed a slight film of oil (looks like motor oil to me) on the underside of the torque converter housing. Right where the transmission connects to the engine block. There's a little gap (with a flashlight you can look right up at the flywheel or so) on the underside of the housing and every so often, it has a tiny bit of oil sitting there. The gap, which is supposed to be there, looks almost like an official vent/seep slit to me. No dripping, no puddles underneath. All fluid levels are fine. Anybody else experiencing this?

Best,
Nico

my tc house has been wet since I bought it 2 yrs ago. never a drop on the garage floor though.
here's why I'm asking: Two technicians at the dealership told me this was completely normal - kind of like "they all do this" scenario. I don't if I want to believe that or not. To me, it should be dry?but that's just me talking.

Same here?when I first cleaned it up, it seemed as if this had already been on going for thousands of miles (probably right from the start.) As in your case, it has never actually dripped. Just enough to somewhat moisten it.

I've had a number of oil leaks. It may be up higher such a valve cover gasket or else where on the block. If it runs down the back of block, it may come out there. I've had that plenty.

NORMAL! BS. Yes older engines may develope leaks but it shouldn't be considered normal. If it's just a film, I wouldn't really worrey too much about it.
If you can't locate the source, the best way it to have UV dye added to the oil. The dealer, Pep Boys etc can do it. The come back in a couple days and it'll be very clear with a black light exactly where it's comming from.

Hi Neil,

Yes, it's just a film.its coloration barely visible (light brown.) It seems to exclusively acc. around the bolt on the pass. side. I checked all the valve covers with telescopic mirrors, as well as all the gaskets/connections above the transmission. Couldn't find a thing.

I was told that I needed a new transmission, because I had a coat of some oily substance on my torque convertor. I was quoted $1000 to change the gasket.

Turns out my oil filter was loose and was dripping on the convertor. Cheap fix ehhh.

Moral of the story is:
Make sure its not something else leaking on it.

You're right. I clean it off every day?and it reappears periodically. It's just enough oil (motor oil, I'd judge by color) to moisten the washer on the underside of the TC housing. I have cleaned EVERYTHING down there?checked every possible leak area with little mirrors and couldn't find a thing. I of course also check the top (valve covers etc.) I doubt that it's the engine rear main seal?as it isn't really a leak - no dripping, no splashing etc. Weird.

Best,
Nico
