Hi All,

New to the forum, have a 21 Durango Gt and Brake rotors are warped with only 15k mikes. Of course the dealer said tough luck.
Ordered new rotors, not mopar.
Trying to make sure I have the tools I need. What size bolts hold caliper brackets? Are they Allen?

thanks!

I would recommend getting yourself a full socket set with shallow and deep sockets along with a set of metric hex-key sockets. I like Craftsman, but the Pittsburg stuff from Harbor Freight is good too. I would also recommend a breaker bar. With that. you should be in for only about $200 and it has almost everything you need.

If you already have tools, then just turn your wheel all the way to one side and look. Since your rig is new, it likely has the phillips or torx screw to hold the rotor on for factory installation. You don't need it, but you will want an impact driver to take it out (not the drill type power tool, but the one you hit with a hammer to punch and twist to break it loose. They are only about $10.

How sure are you that they are really warped? This wouldn't be the first time we've heard of a stealership pushing a service you may not need.

Instead of replacing stuff on the dealer "recommendation", why not try to re-bed the pads and recoat the rotors with some friction material? If you don't drive these things like you stole them once in a while, the rotors can develop an uneven surface which can cause a vibration that feels a LOT like a warped rotor. Re-bedding won't hurt anything, but it just might fix it - and it's a lot cheaper/easier than replacing the rotors & pads.

They could be warped from hard braking and then submersion in water immediately.

Considering some folks get over 70K out of their factory brakes you should be able to save yours and there's no need to throw them out.

If you don't tell your dealer to use a torque wrench on your lugnuts you are pretty much assured warpage.
Even if you do request/demand a TQ wrench, you are still taking your chances.

My rotors were warped at 9500 miles and I know it was from the dealer installed my powder coated rims (which the dealer had done for me)

I'm with @va-terps4 on this one. you should at least take your Durango on a spirited drive somewhere you can repeatedly brake hard and then drive around for a little to let the rotors cool.

I had this happen on my '21 TNG about 6 months ago. I went through a phase where I was driving around in SPORT a lot so I was using a lot of engine breaking and then I took a hunting trip and rode with my buddy and left my Durango at the house. when I got back and went to work the next day it felt just like warped rotors. very noticeable shimming when braking. in my case I knew it could actually be warped rotors because it seemed fine before I left for the trip. a couple fun trips of heavy braking and driving to let the rotors cool and they felt just fine.

You can actually measure run out with a dial indicator but I recommend taking them off and doing a resurfacing on a brake lathe. Then scuff up the brake pads to take the glaze off.

If the rotors and pads are toast, then quality replacement parts will take care of the issue. Even consider an upgrade…
