Starter or just the relay going bad?

I'm having a problem with my '00 4.7L D with 105k.

Lately, about 1 in every 5 times trying to start, I turn the key to start and nothing happens. I back off the key and try again and the truck starts right up.

I was thinking it might be worth swapping out the relay? I'd think if it was the starter, it wouldn't work fine the 2nd attempt everytime.

There seems to be no ryme to when it happens? I just turn the key and back off to run but nothing has happened. Starting the truck is so "automatic" I don't even think about the steps otherwise.

Anything else I should check?

Agree, check the neutral saftey switch.

altough it's a pain, try putting the tranny in neutral the next dozen or so starts? and see if it ever fails?

if it never fails when you'd have had many failures starting the 'normal' way, then it's almost certainly the neutral safety switch?

It happened to me again tonight. This time I was parked in a quiet parking garage and I had the window open when it happened. I heard a "thunk" type noise from under the hood when I turned the key, but no start. Backed off, tried again, started right up.

hm. That may eliminate the neutral switch.

a "thunk" or a "click"?

A "thunk" points to the fat wiring and connections to the starter OR the starter itself.

A "click" might be a bad starter relay, corrosion or other wiring problem in the solenoid circuit, or any of hte problems under "thunk".

It sounded like a mechanical thunk and not the relay.

I'm going to roll the window down before each time I start the truck and see if I hear it again.

If it's indeed a thunk, I'll start looking at the starter.

Look at the wiring connections at the starter first.
