Hey everyone,
I’m in a pickle… 2020 Durango (3.6 4x2) won’t shift beyond 3rd gear and the reverse light is flashing. Long story short I was able to find a valve body and installed it, on the lift the CEL was out and it went into reverse with no issues. Once we put the car on the ground with weight on wheels, all the original problems came back.
Where do we go from here? The dealership isn’t answer calls on a Saturday and we’re 1000 miles away from home and I need to get my family back before returning to work out of state.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

thank you!

Yikes. I would dump it at a dealership and rent a car to get home. Not ideal, but not sure what else you should do, especially with vehicle still under warranty (presumably). Or delay your return home. Or try to drive 1000 miles home in 3rd gear.

Maybe something in here might help...

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately my situation is a bit different than the shared post. When the problem first occurred we were able to have the codes pulled by a local auto parts store. It was a difficult task as I was in another state working and this happened in a different state that what we live in. Ugh…

Anyway, here are the codes:
P1DA8,P1D92,P1D9A and P1D8F.

This lead me to think that maybe the valve body/TCM failed. I drained the fluid and it was fairly clean with no indication of component failure (trans never got hot either). So in went the valvebody, new pan/filter and fresh fluid. While the car was still in the lift we started it to finish the transmission fill and cycled all the gears… reverse worked just fine, drive worked and the CEL was out. I believed all was well and pulled the car off the lift, started it and went to engage reverse and surprise! The CEL came back on, reverse is inop with flashing on the shifter/dash and I could only drive forward up to 3rd gear (33mph-ish).

What changes when the wheels are on the ground or was it just a fluke?

Your D is obviously in "limp mode." It sure sucks being that far away from home with a issue like this. Assuming you are still under warranty, I'd get to a dealer, and see what they can offer. Hopefully, you doing what you did to the trans does not compromise the warranty for it. Recent posts have put the cost of a new 8 speed in the $5k+ range, and they are hard to get.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately the Durango is already out of warranty for mileage (72k). This past year has forced us to take a lot of emergency trips on top of our normal commute in Arizona.

Ok on being out of warranty. Being RWD, you have no transfer case to cloud the situation. When the fluid/filter etc, was being done, were there any signs of critter or other damage under there?

I just ran your listed codes. The P1D92 indicates an internal trans failure. A '20 Durango with just over 71k should not need a trans replacement! You may have some luck if you can appeal to corporate, for some help with the cost. We have not seen much of that lately around here though.

Keep us posted

Don,
We couldn’t find any signs of materials that would be out of the norm. The pan was clean, the oil had a little brown hue to it but there was no materials that we could see with a strainer.
the car has never towed anything and has seen 90% highway miles.
I didn’t take many pictures but the transmission looked as clean as the 40k mile transmission I picked up incase this turns into a swap, I just want to confirm before tearing it apart again.

Good on having an extra trans on hand. The oil for the 8 speed, has been described as a light green watery fluid, unlike the traditional red color we have all seen for years in an auto trans.

The difference between the oil that came out be the new mopar ZF fluid was minimal and what I would expect considering the mileage. The odd thing about reverse is the blinking light isn’t instant, you can feel the car go into reverse and a moment later you feel like it disengages followed by the blinking “R” on the dash and shifter.
