So having just searched these forums, found good info and just registered thought I might contribute a bit.
There's other threads on this topic but thought the more info the better. There are other adapters & ways of doing this but, even being handy w/electronics, this seemed a good way to go $$ + time-wise.

I posted the same review @ AMZN where I bought the adapter (Dongar SimpleUSBPort Dash Cam Power Adapter (10-pin Type D)). I've no relationship w/vendor what-so-ever. And should post an update after a year or so of use (or if it was to fail).

This adapter let's you power a USB device from rear view mirror power connector. It comprises a DC-DC converter (12v -> USB's 5v - the black shrink-wrapped thing), male & female Dodge rear view mirror power plugs, USB A socket plus USB mini & USB micro adapter wires. Makes easy, nice n tidy powering of USB devices near rear view mirror. Steps (YYMV - do @ your own risk, etc):

1 - Gently pull down & toward you from bottom/bottom sides of large cover forward of rear view mirror. Mine detached easily taking down the narrow upper wire cover with it. No broken plastic hooks (as shown in photo), yea!

2- Push tab up from bottom of Dodge black plug in back of rear view & slide out. Insert adapter's plug & socket as intercept for that wire. I wrapped mine w/one wrap of that thin green adhesive-backed felt and inserted it snugly in cavity above mirror stalk.

3) Wiring is done. I wrapped the black module + extra wire with another wrap of green felt and zip-tied it to the metal bracket for rain sensor. Reattached front big black cover 1st then thinner wire cover from rear view -> headliner 2nd.

Powers on w/accessory & while driving. Works great for me so far.

BTW I'm very handy w/electronics, soldering, etc but no-brainer to use this thing vs buying small DC-DC converter, the USB sockets + adapters & somehow trying to neatly & reliably tap into wires, etc.

Edits: Add link for adapter.

Yep, Dongar SimpleUSBPort Dash Cam Power Adapter (10-pin Type D) is what I used - edit my OP to include the link just now.
BTW my review is pending AMAZ approval. Also don't know how I hit it w/a keyword search last week because now I see what you mean - a bunch of hits other than that one

Note it mentions these requirements as well; OEM autodimming rear view mirror without integrated backup LCD display and must use 10-pin connector - read its listing.

Kinda silly I need to install a dashcam right near Dodge's forward facing camera (mine has ACC / FCW / Auto-high beam). Wouldn't think it'd take much for Dodge to integrate dashcam feature into their newest (kinda crappy) UConnect system.

Thanks for this! I've used a Dongar adapter on other cars...they are fantastic, and eliminate the worst part of dash cams, the wiring! Never knew which one would fit the Durango though, and didn't want to experiment to find out.

Thanks for the thanks:) Good to hear the good about Dongar. Again I'll try to post back if I ever have issues with it.

Unrelated FYI: I tow a camper & plan do to something interesting WRT remote rear trailer camera. No great place to add another display in these Durangos. No apparent/easy way to integrate one into OEM headunit/display.
Anyway, will create or add to another thread when/if I do.
  • for now using a remote WiFi camera (no longer recommended) mounted to camper license plate bracket. Uses 12v -> 5v weatherproof converter powered via license light. Using UCCAM app on Samsung Note 8 held on taller cup holder mount as display. Not the greatest; occasional display stutters plus ~ 1 sec delay.
  • ultimately would like to intersect Durango's backup camera & add a switch to swap from it to/from digital camera receiver. This would let me just press a switch near it when towing to be able to use OEM display as trailer rear view.

Thanks again! Got the part from Amazon a couple of days ago, and just finished installing it. Took all of 5 minutes to hook it up, then it took a while (and a few choice words) to get the mirror mounted back. I was expecting that, as I had it off a couple of times in the past installing a MirrorTap and Blendmount for my radar detector, but it was still a bit of a pain.

Anyone having issues w the auto dimming mirror dongle? I connected my Rexing V1P Pro w a rear view camera and it is cycling on and off. When I use the provided cigarette lighter plug it runs just fine. Checked the connections and they are all tight.

Since this is the 2021 thread its also very simple to get a dash cam that comes with the cigarette lighter cable run the wire into the dash powered 12v cigarette lighter. It was very simple to gently tuck the wire into the trim and you can barely see it plugged in.

I have a cheap Amazon 4k dashcam that is running fine off this adapter.

Rexing website warns USB port power may not be sufficient to run camera. I bet the mirror doesn't output quite enough.
