dunno why it does it but my security light will illuminate at times...seemingly random. doors locked....unlocked. key is always out of ignition. tonight i went to lock it and all i got was a relay click, no locking from any door, light was on. went back inside grabbed the key started it cranked right up not sluggish so im pretty certain the battery is ok. anyway after i started it and shut it right back off the locks worked fine. i know the sensor or the front pass door has come apart. i cant unlock and open this door wo the horn going off. cant see that being THE issue but i have seen stranger things

It should blink at about 3-5 seconds when the alarm is armed. If it comes on and stays on, or flashes erratically, I believe that indicates there is an issue with the alarm system itself. Could be a bad door lock, issue with wires, keyfob/key, etc.
Prob best to get it checked out before it "thinks" you're trying to steal it and shuts the engine down and leaves you stranded.

Yes. I had an 01 and currently have an 03, and both have sentry keys with the chip in them. The alarm arm/disarm/lock/unlock is on the fob. I'm surprised it will run at all for long without the sentry key if you have the factory alarm. Could be previous owner had the factory alarm disabled or modified somehow to allow it to run without the sentry key.
I just saw you have a 98, could be a different setup from the 01 and up models; maybe some others with more knowledge of that year will chime in.....

My cali 99, replace with a fed 98 PCM has now produced similar events like yours, But has never "failed" to start. I figure the security options were different from my OEM 99 to the replacement 98. I can walk out at random parts of the day and see the security light on (No blink), unlock car, it blinks about 2-3 seconds, then goes out. other times (and Most of the times) their is no sec light. Other things I do notice and it did it on the oem 99 was the sec light would blink for 0.5 seconds and not blink again for 60+ seconds. I believe that is typical and both PCM are doing it, I don't stick around my D longer that 90 seconds, Always on the move.

i cant seem to communicate with the body control module using my MODIS. its not failing to start so im not sure there is an issue per say but it may be a situation like Dizzy where components have been replaced and not by the dealer. it was a repo vehicle as well. i removed the dis-abler from the steering column wiring. don't think that would have anything to do with it but ive seen stranger things

This is a strange one.
1999 Durango 5.9. I disconnect and reconnect the battery, start it and engine light stays off forever til I ignition off.
With ign off the security light flashes in an off beat timing mode even without arming alarm. Upon the first restart the engine light is on and security light stays off. I tried grounding the recommended wire under drivers kick panel to disarm alarm, and it has no effect on anything.
I get a purge solenoid code, replaced it and I have vacuum from the fuel tank, so It's a false code.
I'm kind of sick over this , any suggestions will be great.
Thanks, From Zip.

How long have you owned your D? Did this issue come up recently, or did you buy it with known issues? You might try removing the negative battery cable, then depressing the brake pedal 30 seconds, the reconnecting, and see if all is quiet.

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango and I can.t get it out of theaf mod it still runs and starts but the lights are flashing off and on and I don't have the Key fob.

Ironically my 05 started this last night. Had a lock smith come out to program a key fob and turns out mine had the different weird key and they have to order it and come back to program it in a few days. Hopeful that will fix the issue. I bought it from a auction with just the standard valet key a few weeks ago. I locked it from the inside last night and when I went to leave my dad's my nephew tried to open the door before I unlocked with the key and it triggered. The key will not disable but will let me start and drive it with the lights flashing. There is no over ride for this alarm according to the dealer I spoke with today. Keyfob is the only way to disarm. Battery is unplugged till further notice. If you find another helpful way to this situation please let me know!!.

You're posting in the wrong forum. This is 1st gen 1998-2003. You should be posting this in the 2nd Gen forums. 2004-2009.

All second gens should be Sentry/SKIMM keys. If a non Sentry key is used to start. It'll run for a few seconds then shut down. After 4 tries it disables the starter and won't restart.

What does your key look like? Is it just a key or is it a Key Fob with buttons?

No, I replied to someone who posted in the wrong forum because I had a similar issue and my only solution was to get the key. There is no over ride for that alarm. And I only have the valet key which is why it isn't over riding when I start the car with it and will let me drive like nothing is wrong except the lights flashing like a disco party.. I was just explaining my situation with the only result I found after speaking to the dealer multiple times and calling a lock smith because they are cheaper. Only to find out the original owner opted into the special key option for that year and they don't carry the key so it's being ordered. I will be remeeting them Saturday for programing of the proper key. Figured as long as it was potentially helpful I should leave a input. My apologies. :)

Sorry....didn't see it was a reply to someone else. My apologies.

1st gens had Sentry and Non-Sentry keys. Your valet key was a non-sentry and most likely had a black plastic head on the key. Sentry keys have Gray plastic. The Sentry Chip is in the key and read by the SKREEM module. The lock/unlock and alarm functions are on a separate fob on the 1st gens. On the 2nd gens the fob is incorporated on the key itself.

Update...the 2nd gen "Valet" key is a Sentry Key without fob buttons to Lock/Unlock Enable/Disable alarm. It can start the car no problem. As you found out if you don't unlock the door with that key it sets off the alarm but it will run.

Batteries+ and Ace Hardware offer the Key/Fob + programming for both 1st and 2nd gens. That avoids having to deal with a locksmith and their high prices.
