So for any of my planned mods to have a lasting impact I need to learn about tuners.

I've seen some videos on Youtube, but what's out there for 21 R/T's to get tuned?

PCM swap? Handhelds? etc?

Curious and wanting to learn.

Thanks.

If you want to add any kind of tune, you will need to either replace your PCM with an unlocked one, or send yours in to have it unlocked.......I dont know if DiabloSport has updated their site for the 21's yet..HP Tuners is another option for an unlocked PCM.

I'm curious, how much HP do you expect out of tunes like these? Are there dyno charts of stock vs tuned? Is the 1/4 mile quicker? How much does this cost? Do they require a certain fuel from then on?

Edit: found DS website that for ~$1100 you get
  • 93 Octane Performance Tune: 28HP 24TQ
  • 91 Octane Performance Tune: 22HP 20TQ
  • 87 Octane Performance Tune: 10HP 10TQ
I'm not sure I would feel the difference in everyday driving...

It's a start. Planned mods he said. There's a lot of potential In the 5.7 and a lot of different options available. Just depends on how far you want to go. There's a lot of info on modded 5.7s, just have to look. Don't know what's available as far as tuners for the 2021s.

I do it cause I pretty much do everything myself. So it's like rebuilding something and making it better with my own hands. Pretty sure I can hit a 12 sec 1/4 mile now that I just ported my 6.4 intake manifold. Honestly didn't think it would be such an improvement but it turns out to be a pretty valuable supporting mod.

If you could give a shit about your warranty, go for it, keep going if it's what you really want to do.

So you bring up a valid point.
I wrestle with this question because while it's fun to mod and update - what's the actual return on investment.
Swapping TB's, Intake, Oil Separator, these all cost money and what are you REALLY getting back.

I call these planned b/c while I'm planning on doing it - I also may not as it's not really a lot of power for the cost.

That being said, I kinda wish I spent the extra money for an SRT, but $10k more...ugh.

Hobby's aren't necessarily investments. Certain hobbies are about creating and building, just because you can. There's a certain satisfaction in doing things yourself also. Cost doesn't really become a factor if you can afford it.

It all depends on what you want to do, or are trying to do.

Agree. I feel like if you want to give the 5.7 a good power increase (like 100hp and over) while keeping it drivable you really have to go deep into into it. Something like a supercharger would do it, but I don't know if there are any solid options for the Durango. Maybe take out the 5.7 and put the 6.4 in there?

And at some point the SRT will start to make more sense. I personally made my peace with the 5.7 as it is. I would say I would spend the money on brakes, suspension, wheels, tires and stuff but I already did that with the Tow n Go Package.

Oh Whipple has a 3.0L Supercharger option now, they have Durango kits. By itself it's a hell of a gain. But you can do even more on top of it. At that point the 8hp70 transmission is no longer an option. Down the road I may do that but that will take a hefty stack of funds, for a whole new drive train on top of a $8500 Supercharger.

Checked out that Whipple, not bad, but taking into account price, smog restrictions, install costs and extras needed I would just get the SRT at that point. Less hassle, maybe cheaper, "dealership friendly", etc. Wouldn't work for me in my situation.

I would like to revive this thread specifically for 2021+ RT assuming <2021 varies. Specifically looking for answers to below questions since the thread started to degrade into wannabe mechanics vs. wannabe tuners. All "hate replies" will be subject to ridicule without cause...assuming mods understand the point of said revival. SPECIFIC QUESTIONS (otherwise don't participate):
1. As of September 2022, what tune makers exist out there in Canada/USA without need to go to actual physical shop? Are there any or is physical presence a must? (Used to be a Ford owner and could get an ECU file sent without need to be at shop.)
2. What are PROs/CONs of their tunes?
3. What device(s) is/are used to load tune for 2021 RT TNG? Are those different for other 5.7Ls for some reason?
4. What warranty considerations are there for any ECU mods?
Thanks for reading all this and being patient!

No, no - most shops will only charge around $12,000 for everything - the Whipple, install, tune, etc. I bought my 2021 Durango RT, Tow n Go for $53k + $12k (for Whipple & install)= $65k. Still a lot cheaper than an SRT and I'll have about 125 more HP! I've also developed a good rapport with my service managers at my local Dodge dealer - they are actually encouraging me to install the Whipple and the 2 SRT Techs they have want me to also - they said it's BS all the people that freak out over warranty. If you do a quality install, know what you're doing or use a reputable local Speed Shop and something happens, they're still going to repair my vehicle under warranty and why wouldn't they??!! I've bought 3 vehicles from them and they want my repeat business. PS. there's numerous videos about the Diablo PCM tune - they claim PEAK HP and Torque increases but on a Dyno graph there's actually losses on the entire power band! Not worth it at all!

I hope you really do not believe your dealer.
Engine problems, transmission problems, driveline problems will all get rejected for warranty, period. Don't fool yourself by the words of a dealer as they have ZERO control on warranty items unless they are thieves and will rip off Mother Mopar to help you. Warranty is a very serious topic and Mopar and they will crush any chances you have to get work under warranty. Stellantis digital requires pictures and data from the PCM before ANY warranty is done for the drive train. Good luck man, but I have this feeling you have money to burn and do not care.

I have to agree… back in 03-04 I was getting my new Taurus serviced at the local Ford dealership.

I saw a 03-04 zinc yellow Terminator Cobra on a flat bed and realized the rearend was blown out. Then I noticed the slicks and all the rubber residue on rear quarter panels. Car was at the track.

The service manager who is a buddy of mine told me that a visiting Ford rep was on site and saw the car and immediately voided his powertrain warranty even after the service manager told him that he’s a great customer and has purchased several fleet vehicles for his A/C company.

The service manger discounted the parts and labor, but in the end the owner had to pay for a new rearend and warranty was voided.

I personally do not trust auto dealers!

LOL!!!! No, no, no - you don't know who you're talking to, LOL! I've been there and done that for over 15 years now!!! I know the head SM personally just like I know the Head SM at Ford and Audi. I have multiple examples of modifying my cars under warranty and every single one of them was covered! I live in a larger city, almost 1 million people but the car community is a tight knit one - everyone knows everyone, we all take care of each other. I had a 2016 Ford Taurus SHO that was almost past Stage 2 tune - Gearhead and LMS/LME tunes, custom CAI, exhaust, bolt-ons, both turbos worked on, etc - the PTU took a dump and GUESS WHAT?! The dealer was fully aware of all my mods and tunes and they fixed it under warranty!! Imagine that! A $3,000 bill they covered 100%! You know why? Well, please read my post again! The service manager at this Ford dealer was a major motor head himself and loved to see my build on the SHO. I also bought an Expedition and an F150 from them along with my SHO. They want my business! Why would they not cover a repair under warranty even though I modified the car - doesn't come out of their pocket! But do you know what does go into their pockets? My business! And once again, it's all about relationships - I learned this from a 20+ year sales career. Play nice and make friends with your SMs and they will take care of you! I have an Audi S4 that was tuned - SAME exact story as my SHO, the trans started slipping - they fixed anyway because my wife bought a Q5 and was going to trade in my S4 for an S6. It's so simple you guys! I've never had a problem. 15 years of doing this and never once a problem with multiple dealerships. And then the bottom line is also - if you can't fix the car and 100% rely on a warranty then you can't afford the car or the modifications, period! I know my car will get fixed under warranty, but if for some very ODD reason it doesn't, I pay the bill. It's risk I take and I've never had an issue.
