There is a 9.25 ring gear, as well as an 8.25. I believe that the 9.25 units were behind the part time 4x4, as well as the RWD models. The AWD models seemed to get the 8.25, except the '00-'03 R/T, which was AWD, had the 9.25.
You should be able to use either one, as long as you match the oem ratio. 3.55 was more common. The alternate, and less common, was 3.92.

Hi right now my 2000 awd came stock with the 9.25 and 355 gears .. as build sheet states found a 392 diff but its a 99 and rock auto shows the 99 and the 2000 as two diff part numbers ....so prob just get another set off of gubber up both 2000 392 gear diffs complete for 400 for my 33s as the chart shiws that to be the best for mpg ...

Does your T case have the 2wd option? If so, that would explain it. Regardless, either one should work. If you wanted to go one further, find a rear end from an '03 D, and pick up rear disc brakes while you area at it.

Soapy:
The Gen 2 D V8 engine choices were the 4.7, or the 5.7. Also, there was no part time 4x4 option for the Gen 2. It was RWD, or AWD full time.

When I swapped the part time NV 233 T case in my previous '01 Durango SLT 4.7L for full time NV 244 case, all of the Gen 1 D's I located, that were equipped with a part time T case, or RWD, came with the larger 9.25 rear end. My '01 or course, had the 9.25.

The ones that were equipped with AWD from the factory, got the smaller 8.25. I have yet to find a Gen 2 D with the 9.25 unless it was RWD.

2000 was a transition year, there are a lot of things that are 'unique' to that year.

Parts catalog shows most of the internal part numbers are different for 99 vs 00, but I don't know if that was just a part numbering change. Don't have time to go see if the old parts are mapped to the new parts in the parts system.
