I got my new stubby antenna in and decided to put it on. Well when I went to take my antenna off the stud broke from rust.

Now I'm trying to get this chrome piece off with the notches. It won't budge.

I fear the rust has set in under it freezing it up. I sprayed WD-40 on it and I assume it just screws off like a nut? Any suggestions?

Yes, it screws off.

Try spraying some PB Blaster (or anything similar) rather than WD-40 and then try again. Although, when I changed my antenna, I don't think I even took that piece off :?

But now I have to take it off as the antenna stud broke off down inside.

I'll most likely have to replace the whole unit due to that. No biggie though.

EDIT: Well I got it off and now I need to find a new aluminum piece shown since the stud is broke off in it.

Doh! :wall:

The stud on mine was corroded too. It wasn't stuck however!

Keep in mind, the threads are different on each end of the stud when you get the new one. While you have to get the old one out of the hole regardless to put the new one in? the new stud may not be the same at the stocker stud.

IIRC they're slightly different. Thus, I'd recommend just the lower part replacement and not buying a new stock stud. For that, get a universal kit on a cheapie antenna setup and fin the one you need.

If you can't find anything at all? I'll take mine off and find out the threading on each side for you to go get a replacement (or make your own)

Does the stud unscrew out of the antenna itself? If so, then it's not coming out. I put it in the vice and tried to unscrew it to no avail. It was on the verge of breaking like the lower part of it did.

I was going to look around the parts stores for a universal kit to replace the stud itself. I could also just make one out of two types of bolts and tig weld them together or just thread my own.

This is the fun part of mods, putting them together. :cheesy:

cable looked kinda crusty, might be worthwhile to replace it while you're in there?

the cable is an air-dielectric cable, and when moisture gets into it things get unpleasant? so given that you're doing the hard part anyway, might be worthwhile to slap the new cable in as well?

I agree may as well install the entire assembly in at the same time

Yea, I went ahead and replaced it as a whole unit. I figured the same thing that both of you did once I picked it up today.

Getting it ready to pull through with old cable

Pulled old cable and boot out

A little pulling and the new one comes through

Pushed it through the side panel

Pushed new boot in place

Connected it to existing cable behind glove box

Universal kit I picked up, it cost $5.15 total

Stud from kit, it came with 3 studs

New antenna, as you can see I painted it white to match the D. I should have known better to order anodized red as it always looks violet to me

Inside showing true color

I also sanded the chrome piece that hold the base down and shot it white.

I'll put it together tomorrow once the paint on the chrome piece dries and cures. Then I'll post the finished pics.

Looks good so far!

Got the new antenna on today.

The chrome piece that I painted white. Not sure I like this look, might have to go and order a new one and leave it chrome.
Image

Place the antenna on it and you can see a gap
Image

Masked it off so I could use the angle grinder and take the black piece down some so I won't have a gap.
Image

Afterwards and with some trimming to get it back to what it looked like before
Image

Antenna screwed down nice and tight to the white piece. I'll give it a few days or so to see if it grows on me. If not, like I said I'll just order a new chrome piece and leave it chrome.

Thanks! I do love the look of it overall. I keep looking out my front window at it while I'm driving.

Now a little update: Since the bottom of the antenna was touching the white piece, it was grounding out and not getting a reception. So I had to add a rubber piece inbetween them.

A number #9 O-Ring fit perfectly

Here it's in place

With the antenna screwed down. if you go this route, just don't over tighten as you might end up squeezing the O-Ring out of place. I got it tightened down real good though without a problem. It's not as noticeable in person as in the closeup pic.

I'd probably like the chrome piece a bit more. But it looks good how it's as well. Great job
