Just bought my Durango it's losing oil but no leak and smoke white smoke. And the engine light stays on. What can it be please help am wanting to know if it's safe to drive from Newark de to Kentuky Louis
Sounds like it's burning it. How many miles does it have on it? Could be something simple (I know some engines can leak from the intake manifold) it it could be just worn out and there's oil leaking past the piston rings.

As far as driving it... You're rolling the dice. If you check the oil at EVERY fuel fill it might make it, depending on how much it's going though it might not.

It has over 200, miles on it runs great though
I had an 01 with the 4.7 that did the same thing. Ran really great, smooth as could be, but went through 4 quarts of oil in 300 miles. It had 190k on it. Oil consumption is a big problem, as low oil will cause catastrophic engine damage.

Tricia:
Welcome to DDN. What engine does your new to you '04 Durango have? Do the key dance, and tell us what code(s) appear in the odometer window? Start with the ign key at off, and then rotate it kind of quickly from off to run 3 x within 5 seconds. You should end up with the key in run (not start), engine off.

Tell us what P codes you see?

Don

If you’re loosing oil & you don’t have a leak then it’s definitely going into of the engine where oil should not be going. Intake leak would be a cheap easier fix if it’s the problem but if it isn’t the intake then plan on taking apart the whole engine to fix it.
If that’s the Only problem with the Durango then you can probably get by doing the drive but every 50 to 100 miles I’d check the oil level & top off when needed. With all that being said though you bought a Durango with a big engine problem. Best to take it back if you can. If you can’t & need to make the trip asap, definitely check & top of the oil often.

What do u mean do the keys dance? The check engine light stays on

Hi Patricia:
Is this with the 4.7, or 5.7 engine?
The fact that the CE light remains on, tells you there is at least one current trouble code stored in the OBD system.
You can read the codes yourself by doing the procedure, aka, the "key dance", that I explained to you.
With over 200k miles on it, you may have what are normal issues, or problems that need to be addressed.

Before you head out of town, I would also have the battery properly load tested. Replace it if it comes back less than 100%.

Oooph! That suh-ucks!
The "white smoke"....is it a sort of bluish-white smoke? Or is it bright white and no blue tint?

The reason I ask is because there's really no such thing as "white smoke". Pure white coming from the tailpipe is steam from water getting into the cylinders. Most of the time you can smell the antifreeze smell coming from the exhaust when that's the case. That and steam dissipates quickly while smoke hangs in the air for a bit.

That usually means a pretty BIG problem like a bad head gasket or possibly worse. And that would mean that you probably wouldn't want to risk a long drive like the one you're planning because you have an above average chance of getting stranded on the road.

If it's just oil smoke you might make it ok if you follow the advice about stopping frequently and checking the oil level. But a long trip isn't going to make it any better. That's for sure.

I agree with taking that thing back and at least try to get your money back. Since, in all likelihood, they knew it had a problem when they sold it to you.

Good luck.

A week ago I only added oil a day after I got it and have it since but it's smoking white smoke and sometimes put of the blue it will act like it has problem staying started. That's happen twice
How much oil did you have to add the day after buying it? That right there tells me a bit about the seller. They couldn't be bothered to top it off before selling it? And, if they were still driving it, they obviously weren't maintaining it well. I'm guessing this was a private seller and not a dealer/lot? If it was a dealer/lot, I'd take it back asap and get 100% of your money back, no warranty repairs or offering to fix it, just return it. Otherwise, as Don said said above, do the key thing and write down the P codes. It may be something as simple as an oxygen sensor or just new plugs (both of which could be causing the problem of it staying started as well), but I suspect due to the condition it was sold to you, it's possibly more than that.

I personally wouldn't drive that vehicle outside of your town, definitely not through several states. At least until you find out what you're dealing with. You'd be better off just renting a car.

Just some advice, not trying to be mean, but next time you go car shopping, either take the vehicle to a reputable shop to inspect it, or bring someone with that has some knowledge of cars and problems to look for. Low oil level and check engine light should've been a big red flag. Makes me so mad when people take advantage of others.
