Guys, Today when i stopped the car after driving home from work i noticed the coolant started to overflow after a few min. Also today is the 1st day when the outside temp went upto 65F during winter here in upstate ny. Opened up the hood and saw the overflow tank was getting full. When i fire the car up the coolant level goes down (as it gets sucked in to the engine) instantly and the reservoir shows the coolant at a normal level. When i shut it off it starts to creep back up very slowly on the reservoir. Car has about 145k. I see no signs of the coolant leaking anywhere from the waterpump. No smoke coming from the tail pipes. No milky residue on the oil cap. didnt see any overheating, fans kick on when i let it sit on idle. Im a bit puzzled. Do you think its the head gaskets? or could it be a faulty water-pump?

car is a 2011 durango 5.7 hemi. about 145k.

When you say overflow, are you talking out of the overflow tank and onto the ground? There might be a bit of air in the system. When was the last time the cooling system was flushed and new coolant installed? It would be normal for the OF tank level to rise and fall depending on rpms. It is not normal to have coolant coming out onto the ground.

Is it possible that the system might be overfilled? If a head gasket was bad, I would think that the overflow would happen with the engine on, not after you turn it off.
Try removing the OF tank cap, running it at idle up to temp, and see if you get any air coming up and out.

Could still be a bad thermostat. When did the problem start occurring? Before the thermostat change? Did you test the new thermostat?

Where did you buy the thermostat? Dealer or aftermarket auto parts store? New thermostat installed correctly/orientation correct?

What year Durango, and how many miles? If yours is a '13-'17 RT, there is an extended warranty on the water pump. I'd bet you have air in the system. Did the overheating come about on it's own, or after you swapped the T stat?

It has never over heated or got hot at all, just puked coolant from overflow when I turn it off, this was happening before I changed the thermostat for the first time that is why I changed it
I have a rad cap coming I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not
2011 citadel hemi with 170,000km with tow package
I even towed my trailer for 2 hrs last week and 2 hrs home no overheating

It may very well be air in the line, but it sounds like the thermostat is starting to go. It's possible that after you shut the vehicle off, you thermostat is slowly closing, causing the coolant to back flow into the tank. Considering the miles on the vehicle and that a coolant flush should be done, you should definitely swap the thermostat, replace the coolant radiator cap and replace the water pump as well.
