I'm wanting to purchase a radar detector and I've narrowed my search down to two, the Uniden R7 and the Gen 2 Valentine V1. I've searched the Forum but I'm not able to locate any recent information on this topic.

I'd love any input from anyone who has either of these radar detectors, both positive and negative. Further, if you want to make a case for another radar detector, feel free to chime in. I'm all ears!

Thanks, in advance, for any pertinent feedback!

Search Vortex Radar on YouTube, he is the #1 source IMO of any and all radar comparisons. He is super in depth with each radar and even shows how they work in range vs different environments etc. He has a specific video between the two you are considering I'll link here:

My choice last year was between the same 2 radars your looking at now. This video as well as a few others I watched helped me make up my mind. I now currently own 2 Valentine One Gen 2's, and have been pretty happy overall with them. What sets this particular radar apart from most others, is a companion app called JBV1 you can run along side it with even more customization than most detectors are able to do.

Edit:

I have run the radar on some in town trips, as well as a vacation through several states more recently. With the advanced warning you get from the range on these things, it will blow your mind. On my recent trip, I had a State Trooper in Ohio I picked up for about a mile and a half before I got to him (he was facing the other way on a bend in the highway), and an additional three and 3/4 miles from the rear, absolutely incredible.

I have had a Escort iX since 2/2018 and have driven over 75k miles with it mirror mounted via blendmount while using it with waze for long trips. It has saved my butt countless times and has basically paid for itself x3. While it is to be discontinued, the new version is out. The things I don't like about is is the false alerts on k band with the Hondas and Acuras with lane assist/parking sensors. I've opted to not turn it off due to some departments in my area still using k band and have become accustomed to it.

I'll second the recommendation by @jfire72 about Vortex Radar. He has some very good information posted.

I've been using a Radenso Pro M for about a year now, replaced an old Escort Redline, and I'm very happy with it. Has very good highway range (I do a lot of highway driving), it is a stealthy detector, so the VA troopers shouldn't pick it up if they are using a radar detector detector, and does a great job filtering out false alerts from other cars' BSM systems - I get a little noise from newer Mazdas, but otherwise it is much better than my old Redline. It also includes GPS and has an internal database of red light and speed cameras. I was back home last month - Long Island / NYC, the RLC capital of the world - and it alerted on every one. I used to pull out my old stand-alone Garmin with an RLC file when I'd head home, but not any more. Since it has GPS, you can tag locations that might give you consistent false alerts, like store automatic door openers.

I also use a Blendmount under the mirror, and have been since I got the Redline six years ago.

3rd on Vortex - he has a lot of great real world tests & detailed discussions about how the various settings & features work on the units he has tested.

This site is also very useful, tho not as active as it once was:
Radar Detector & Countermeasure Forum (rdforum.org)

I was going to mention that website and forgot, great mention @MikeD1!

That site can really help you "dial in" some of your settings with detectors, and they can help you customize it to your liking, very knowledgeable folks over there. The site can also help you further narrow down your choice for which detector is the one for you as well.

As has been mentioned, Blendmount is a very nice solution to mount and or wire your radar to the Durango. I personally am just using the suction cup mount that came with my detector, but did use their wire tap kit to wire it into the rear view mirror.

Hi, I wouldn't waste your money. I'm a former police officer and a radar and lidar instructor. The only thing a radar detector will do for you is alert you when to pull over because by the time it goes off the police officer has already clocked your speed.
Law enforcement radars are too smart these days. Police officers even have radars that will detect radar detectors. If it's illegal in your state.
Also a thing for thought as if you get a radar detector it will not detect a lidar which is a laser beam that is shot from the lidar to your license plate. Good luck

I've used the Valentine 1 first gen on both my vehicles. I did the periodic updates to keep up with LEOs equipment improvements and nuisance alarms. I came to the end of the line on updates when the Gen 2 came out as my Gen 1 detectors were now non upgradeable. Valentine allowed a small discount trading in for the new Gen 2.

The purchase was substantial so I only bought one. After a long wait I finally received my new Gen 2. It is a considerable improvement over the Gen 1 that had all the current updates. I've picked up radar traps as much as 3 miles away. No false alarms so far from automobile safety generated radar signals. After using it a while we purchased a second gen 2 for our Ram 1500.

Luck, situational awareness and Valentine 1 radar detectors have kept us ticket free for 25+ years. (knock on wood).
We have also purchased the Blendmounts for our vehicles to keep them mounted on the rearview mirrors and have hard wired them so there are no dangling cords.

Are you for real!? How long ago were you in Law Enforcement, the 70's?

Ignore everything MPclancy67 said.

There is so much wrong with that post and what was said in it, it is just ridiculous. I'll go over what is true and what isn't here based off that post.

1. A detector can and will notify you well before you even see the source of where it is coming from depending on conditions and terrain. In some cases it is alerting you for a threat several miles down the road where they can't read your speed, never the less see you or even know your there, again depending on terrain and conditions. Now if we are talking about instant on, or "pop" then that is another story, they are close and have you in sight. It is also totally wrong to say once your radar goes off they have your speed (reread previous statements), unless it is LIDAR, then yes your SOL.

2. LIDAR (layman's term is laser) is absolutely something that can be picked up by radar detectors, just like MCRD, X, K, KA, and KU. Hell some of them can even pick up the traffic enforcement for red light cameras.

3. There are several detectors that are undetectable by a LEO. Yes some LEO's have tech to know if your running a detector, however if you have the right detector installed they can't tell if your running one.

4. To say law enforcement radar is too smart these days is also a scare tactic. Some do have front and rear radar which is sort of newish but that uses the same frequencies that have been out for decades. LIDAR is not new either and has been around close to 30 years or so. While the gear they use is smaller and newer, it is still using the same frequencies and light tech (LIDAR) as they always have.

The detector alone even with everything posted on what they can do here can still net you a ticket. Good situational awareness and common sense as well as other countermeasures besides using a detector can also be your best friend. I look at the detector as a reminder to keep my speed in check, when it does goes off it does make me double check and be more aware of how fast I may be going.

I do appreciate the input, MPclancy67, and I completely understand what you're saying. I should have been more specific in my original post. This isn't my first radar detector. I'm simply replacing one that recently broke. I'm familiar with their limitations but I'm all about layers of protection. It is amazing what the units today are capable of. If I'm going to spend the money on a replacement, I just want to get the best bang for my buck.

Again, thanks to everyone for the suggestions!
