I am replacing my front brake calipers on my 2000 D 4x4 5.9L and a bit concerned about plastic caliper pistons that are now pretty standard on rebuilds from most auto retailers.

I know plastic doesn't transfer heat as much as steel, but wonder how durable they are under heavier braking conditions. I tow tournament ski boats and 20 ft. enclosed race trailer. So has anyone had any issues with the newer plastic pistons?

Thanks in advance for your input.

My SRT10 had phenolic/resin pistons factory and I had no issues with performance braking on a 5klb viper truck!

I do get your concern as it was the same for me when I first saw a plastic intake on Chevy back in the late 80s. But today, everything is plastic so no worries!

Reminds me of the composite rotors on the Ford Contour. It shocked me that anyone would use composite rotors and angered me that they couldn't be turned and had to be replaced.

I would not turn most rotors today and with any performance rotor (slotted and or drilled) you cannot turn them either.
